hey alan...no, it is the original frame..they built em to haul back then..you could put 5 fat gals in the rear...thats why they used to say ..it rides like a cadillac..
i know how ya feel alan...some mornings i cheat and take one of the pills they gave me when i had my hand surgery a few months back.. makes it all better..ha ha ha ha ha
i still have to finish cutting the front sheet metal out of a 65 econoline..i have been putting it off for days.. but really need to get it done..its been paid for for weeks..
i have been working on this hearse for a year now..i have been trough so many part's combinations..i was wanting a 350 or so final gear because i am using a 15% overdrive trans with 31" tires and need the engine to be around 2700 rpm at 65..had it all worked out once but forgot which parts i had figured to use..the rear gears i have are 42 10 teeth but forget what ratio that is..or if the carrier i have painted already is the one i was going to use or not..does anyone know the gear ratio of this set-up, or what i needed to get the rpm right at that speed???
Are you sure you counted the teeth right? That gear ratio is 4.20's?!
2700 rpm's at 65 is way high too. Especially with a diesel engine. Your engine is not gonna like you much if you make it spin that hard for very long. You should be down around 1,500-1,800 rpm's at 65. That'll give you room to accelerate if you have to as well. With a 31" tall tire, the math works out to be around 3.73 or 3.90. Diesels make gobs of torque though, I'd go with 3.55's and bring the rpm's down a little more. That's plenty steep to pull out.
I just did a little more math. If you mis-counted the pinion gear and it has 11 teeth, that's a 3.81 gear set. I'd say that would be a good one to go with.
hey alan..yes in a big cube diesel like my bus, 2700rpm would be kinnda high at 65..but i have been running the 6.2 and 6.5 turbo diesels in my motorhomes and trucks for several years..and i find they like the higher rpm at speed for both power and fuel economy, 1800 is way low in the power band of these engines with lowered comp. extra boost and fuel turned up..my motorhome ran over 3200 at 65 mph with a thm400 and 456 gears and loved it..got 14mpg in a 13,000 lb dry weight rig
Well then, the 4.20's should do what you want them to.
I just finished my second cup O' coffee and I'm starting to wake up now. We have rain, but not too bad. Of course it's still dark, so I can't really tell.
Trust me...... It's rainning! This weather sucks looks like next week has some suck to it too.
Ches what we're going to be looking for is something close to the aftermarket rear bumper that is on the car allready. Hopeing to get enough out of the insurance company after doing the work ourselves to get the entire car painted. The clear is coming off pretty bad. We'll get out a DA sander and sone 220 grit, feather it all down, get the rock chips out and go back with frsh paint and it will be a nice looking little car.
Well I'm getting me another cup of coffee going, and maybe start something for breakfast.
Unk Bob
