I read about 685 posts in this thread and it's become very clear that the V10 is a better engine than any other engine, from Ford or from any other maker or brand. I appreciate all the good objective posts because it's sure made it easier for me to understand the pros and cons of each, the PSD and the V10, and now it's so clear that regardless of use, no matter what, in any and all circumstances the V10 is just better. Thanks guys! You can go back to sniffing diesel fumes!
Says the V10 owner....
Diesel doesn't smell in the cab. You're the one who gets to smell my exhaust.
It's probably more likely the drive thru person that hates the diesel smell or sound more than me. I've been thanked for turning off my engine when in fact it was running, and had someone start filling my gas tank because they didn't realize my truck hadn't yet been turned off. The V10 is in fact so quiet it has a negative sound signature, it may absorb sound it's that quiet. If I don't like the smell of the diesel I just roll up my window.
No one has yet answered my question as to how a V10 stands up when really worked hard, such as a hot shot.
The main reason I wouldn't use one for a hot shot is fuel mileage. If you figure 3000 miles a week at 11 mpg avg vs 7 mpg the difference in fuel at $2/gal would be $300 plus. That would be nearly $15k per year difference.
Then again you have the question of whether the V10 would even last a year doing that type of work!
If I don't like the smell of the diesel I just roll up my window.
Thats hard to do when your sitting in traffic or at the driveup with the A/C on. Its that sticking hot and humid you shure don't want to shut off the A/C or roll the windows down.
There was a guy that posted in the V10 forum last year that had a V10 he used as a hotshot hauler. He had around 300k on it and he said it had the original trans in it. If I was a hot shot hauler I'd have a medium duty truck anyway. The engines and transmissions last longer.
Can someone please tell me what a hot shot is? Thanks!
A hot shot is a trucker who uses a 1 ton dually or similar and operates it over the road like a semi. I think the technical term is LTL for "less than truck load".
I read the posts in this thread too. Yes, I am embarrassed to admit it but it is true. Anyway, this is what I got out of it...
1. A lot of people here drink beer. Maybe too much. Many of those people like popcorn as well.
2. V10 is the best gas engine Ford ever put in a truck. Mileage sucks and that's the same sound from your wallet at the gas station. V10 is powerful and can tow well. It is a durable engine. V10 owners like to bench race and would prefer that no diesel be manufactured with a turbocharger so that they could be king of the hill.
3. Pre-2007 diesel is more durable and gets much better mileage. It has high cost of entry but is more economical long term and has good resale value. Every diesel owner prays they don't have to repair anything because it will delay retirement by a year. Diesel has a love-hate relationship with the public by having a reputation for being stinky, smokey, and loud. New diesels resolve all those issues but are very complex and assumed to be very unreliable. New diesels get poor mileage and make a V10 a worthy alternative. Hot rodders leave nothing stock and prefer diesel because it can rip any V10 a new tailpipe hole.
4. 7.3L owners have the best engine ever put in a Ford truck and will drive it to the grave. They will forever wish for the good old days of tractor-like clatter and pulling races with Cummins mechanical engines. Some make it a part-time hobby to rescue 6.0L owners stranded on the side of the road. Eventually some 7.3L owners will be forced to buy a new truck and it will be a V10 because no other diesel engine will be good enough.
5. 6.0L owners are the next generation of 6.4L owners. They'll try anything once - even jumping off a cliff.

2 and 4 are 100% correct .
3 is not true, my V10 will out pull a turbo diesel, so why should i care if it has one or not?
