Double the MPG?

Towing 10K and keeping up with traffic, I can get 9.85 in the hills.
Towing 10K running 75-90 in hills I never get worse than 7 MPG.

What kind of Mileage are you getting?

Sounds fair to me. I would still outpull it.

Actually right at double the mpg's, depending on which PSD you are talking about. I got 19.5 mpg's going to Dayton, Ohio with 9k lbs. I ran 70 mph on the interstate for 215 miles and 55 mph for 125 miles through the hills.

How? Every guy I know with a 7.3 PSD says 14MPG towing 10K, 15-16 city and 19-21 highway.

What kind of wind drag?

The worst I have ever gotten with mine unloaded is 21 mpg. Best has been 23. My uncle has a 99 or 2000 model that he gets 19 mpg's towing a 36' camper(not sure on the weight). A lot of it also depends on how you drive it and what kind of mods you have. Both of ours are bone stock and we stay out of the throttle unless we need it. Not much wind drag on my trailer.

I should try that some time.

I run it hard all the time, my last empty tank was 10.24 mpg.

So what is the worst tank you have ever seen with your 7.3?

My worst was 6.56 MPG after a day of idling and post pulling.

I check my mileage every tank and the worst I have seen on my 7.3 is 19.5. The worst out of my 5.4 unloaded was around 13.5. The best I've gotten out of it was 17. It's been a while since I towed with it, so I won't even try to guess on it. My 5.0's get between 14-17 unloaded. I haven't towed anything over 6k lbs or farther than about 20 miles, so I don't know the towing mpg's on them.

19.5 MPG. WOW.

You have never gotten worse than that? That is 3.5 better than my highest fuel mileage.

Have you ever had it running all day working out of the back of it, pulling posts, hauling hay out of fields, etc?

19.5 is the worst it's gotten. Period. Towing, unloaded, etc. I've towed all over TN, VA, WV, KY, OH, and NC with it, so it's seen its share of hills. No to the last part.

At fuel prices right now, that is a $9,000 difference every 100,000 miles.

Not sure what the deal was, didn't think it was possible to get bad diesel, but a couple tanks ago it ran like crap and dropped to just under 14 mpg (13 and change), granted I spent a lot of time in traffic and don't exactly take my time down the freeway. Sounded a tad rough (knocking or something) driving up a steep mtn to a friends place, and I actually checked the oil when I stopped not knowing what was going on.

Went ahead and ran it down to almost empty, refueled with a full tank from a station I'm more familiar with and was back up to 16 under identical driving conditions - but sounded like it was supposed to. That was unloaded, but all the driving was in traffic, around town, rushing to be somewhere and taking every opportunity to open it up on the on-ramps. (Some of it was in the hopes of cleaning out whatever could have been causing it to run funny, some of it was getting a good feel for how the stock 7.3 runs. Found the last of my parts, just waiting for them to get here now before I start mods.)

The current tank seems like it should be back up to 19/20 at the rate it's going. Putting my foot through the firewall I get a pretty consistent 15/16. Driving responsibly 19/20. The one time I kept it under 70 was over 21.

(It did occur to me that I should drain the fuel filter - but it's time to change the filter anyway.)

That's an awful lot of emergency shipments. If the company can wait one day then it would be much cheaper, easier, and more efficient to just ship it ups/fed ex, etc. I can order something 150-200 lbs from Jegs on Monday and have it sitting on my porch on Tuesday for a total of 10 dollars shipping.
There are entire companies and division of companies (think FedEx and UPS) that do nothing but custom critical shipping. They service many companies that need parts, supplies etc for equipment that they consider vital to their operation in order to make money. The cost of shipping is a fraction of what it would cost in not getting this equipment up and running right away.
If you start talking about the medical and military fields then you are talking about people's lives. Waiting a day in not an option. Comparing your Jegs shipment to these shipments is not even in the same realm.

Read the first sentence of what I typed and you quoted me on. I said "if they have to have it that same day I can understand going that route." That would include all fields like medical and military that you mentioned.

Also, read the other part where I said "If the company can wait one day then it would be much cheaper, easier, and more efficient to just ship it ups/fed ex, etc." Notice I said "if" they can wait. Obviously medical emergencies would fit into the category of not being able to wait.

You make it seem like these type of shipments are rare when in fact they are more common then you think. That is all.
