Looks a lot like some of the mountains we saw in Utah. Man, that was an awesome week. I'd love to go back there again someday. We were frequently above 7000 feet, camped our first night at just over 9000 feet, and got a little over 10,000 feet at one point. It was odd to still see snow on the ground though, being about 70 degrees outside and in late June. We put it to good use though, using it to pack our coolers. That helped a lot when we were going 2 days between making stops in a town where we could buy ice.
If you feel the need for a roadtrip to get to the mountains, I live just NW of Denver and have a spare room you're welcome to, whenever. Our weather was damp & chilly (40's) all weekend (yes, for you 'tender-types', 40's is just CHILLY! LOL) so I loaded the dogs up & drove the hour or so out to where the ski resorts are (Breckenridge & Keystone) that I have a ski pass to. I drove over Loveland pass which sits at 11,990ft. Takes about 80minutes to get there, depending on traffic & conditions. It was VERY windy and just a smattering of snow, but still, there were some dorks out there in an Audi A6 with their skis, etc. Best part was, the idiot that was driving had his amber tinted goggles on the entire time...
In the summer, the mountains is where you go, b/c it's easily 10 - 20* cooler than being near the city. Plus... it's the mountains... 'nuf said.
Thanks Brendan. You never know, I may just decide to take you up on that offer some day.
If you like to ski/snowboard it's the place to be.... unless you go up to BC or the Alps! During the week while I'm at work you could even use my pass to hit the slopes for free! I've got DSL at the house w/wireless, 2 dogs, beer in the fridge and liquor in the bar downstairs. I don't know that we could match Scott's BBQ skills, but it's worth the effort!!! LOL
Here's my deal with the ski & snowboard. I've been skiing twice, snowboarding once, and all three times I ended up staying in the last day of a 3 day lift pass. I simply was not enjoying myself at all. I was cold, wet, falling down, had no control, and was just miserable. Now, I think that was a lot because I was with people who were quite experienced and didn't want to take the time to help a beginner learn the basics. Since then, I've just not had much desire to go back to the slopes. I might be willing to try it again with some lessons though.

I could have written this myself 45 years ago. I learned my lesson in a hurry. Never tried again. I even got tangled up in the rope tow on the beginners slopes. Screw that. It is not only wet and cold, it can be embarrassing.

It's hard to get wet up here, unless you're sweating that much! We've taken a number of newbies out, and when you do that you're (IMHO) obligated to hang out with them, guide, advise, and do what you can to help them get the hang of it. One of the most important things for snowboarding is figuring out which foot to put forward. There's an easy test for that. Totally up to you if you want to swing out, but I wouldn't leave you hanging on the slopes.

What's the test consist of?
I appreciate that. Makes my chances of coming out go up.
Actually, no one went through this with me and I spent my first day at Breckenridge STRUGGLING (and crashing alot too!!) because I was riding "regular". 3/4 of the way through the day I got some tools and flipped things around to go "goofy" and the difference was night & day! That may have been what happened to Jeremy. Maybe he'll make it out to CO before Lisa takes of and we can have a Super Duty Day at the slopes!!
We should really try and set something like that up!! Can you tell I'm excited for the season to get going??
it's weird Brendan......according to that test I am supposed to ride goofy. Maybe I'm the exception to the rule, but I ride regular stance, although every single one of those tests would say I should be goofy haha. I've been Snowboarding for 23 yrs, and riding skateboards for probably 27 yrs. Wakeboarding for about 18yrs or so? Always left foot forward. It's fun to wakeboard either way though, always ridden just as much backwards as forwards

I can't remember which foot I had forward to be honest. That's been, probably 6-7 years ago that I went out there and tried it. All I remember is having trouble with catching an edge and doing face plants for two days straight. I eventually just rode the board down the hill sideways, on the back edge, and called it quits.
If you arrange something, let me know. That sounds like fun! It would have to be on the inexpensive side though for me, as I've already burned through a lot of money this summer.

Thats kinda funny, not your having problems with it, but it reminds me of the first time i went snowboarding. Sounds like exactly the same experience!
I was also 17 years old, and finished a 12 pack of beer before I went though.
It sucked. I think I could do it if I just had someone to show me how. It looks like a blast. I've picked up on most everything else I've tried before that I was new at, and been able to hold my own with a little coaching. The snowboarding thing was frustrating though because I just didn't know what to do or try differently.
