When do you start building?

are you on lots of land, or more just a small lot?

I liked your idea of going to a wood basement, it makes a lot of sense if you ask me.
I had one years ago, and really liked it.

We are getting an RTM, and they are starting on it in march, should be ready by august.

We have 320 acres (2 quarter sections) of farmland about 18ish miles from saskatoon.

We are still very undecided about the basement. Sandi has been talking to engineers and whatnot, and alot of them all say to go with the ICF over the wood due to strength when shifting, specially in our cold climate.

There are lots of really good plus's to both. If ICF was a little cheaper we would be going with that regardless i believe.

Sherm, have you heard there is lots of lawsuits against contractors that have installed the ICF basements, and have done it wrong? One guy Sandi talked to said there were tons of lawsuits around here, cause everyone and their dog took the one day course to build ICF's, and on alot of them, it was done incorrectly.
He also gave us the number of one guy that is supposedly the best of the best around Saskatoon.

i have heard wind of a few incidents. i've also seen some ICF work passed that should have been condemned!! the problem is keeping them true and square with the world while tapping and tamping them to compact the concrete and pack it down so there's no voids. i for one would really like to pull some of them apart after they're formed up for a month and see how many voids and unsafe "empty" spaces there really is...

thats just me though, i don't put any faith in that system, not that you'd notice...

I wouldn't be scared to go with a wood basement, we had one on the farm by Saskatoon and never had a problem with it. That house has been standing for 26 years now.

Marlon, was that farm out near langham somwhere? I wouldnt mind taking a peek if the house is still standing!

Oh one problem was some of the contractors used the wrong rebar too.

Im still undecided, I really hear goods and bads about both ICF and wood.

Talk to a carpenter and they tell ya wood, talk to a concrete guy and they tell ya ICF haha.

The weather in Prince george where i used to live, gets extremely cold.
I think the colder the climate, the better a wood basement is.
But thats the opinion of a non pro builder, just me.

that is a crock. if your hole is dug properly and set on undisturbed ground, properly backfilled and so on, there shouldn't be any shifting. besides... concrete will crack, wood will flex...

You may be right. I should get you talking to some of those ICF guys lol.

So far the cheapest quote that Sandi has gotten for a ICF has been 35k. With those kinda basements cheapest doesnt always mean the best job done either.

Before we build anything we still have a lot more reading and researching to do thats for sure. We have called to get wood basement quotes but people dont seem to be calling us back about them for some reason.

Thats my thinking.
I have had 3 basements with small cracks in the walls, and 1 without from concrete.
But the wood basement was perfect, and very warm.

man, i love this quad... if anyone's looking for a mid sized quad thats tough as nails and all heart, this is the one... the suzuki KQ450. i am nothing but impressed with it. just finished plowing my driveway and 2 elderly neighbors driveways and its amazing how much snow it can move. not to mention the many times i've been out at -30 or worse and its never skipped a beat. best 8 1/2 g's i've spent in a long time... looking forward to some mud to try out the new rubber... they sure bite in the snow!!!
