Its a 79. The only thing I can think of is that, maybe they did move the springs forward on a ext cab 8ft frame. Need to check the body mounts in the morning. Does anyone have any pictures of thier rear tank on a 6ft bed crew cab? If so please send them to hllahlavl@yahoo.com thanks.
yes but the 34" rear frames were the 4wd - highboy trucks I mentioned. The 73-79 2wd trucks had the 37" frames as did the 78/79 4wd.
But since his truck is a 79 2wd then it SHOULD be the same. Then again, this is Ford we are talking about here anything under the sun could have come on the truck
Your wrong, I have 2 73 crews, one is a shortbed and one is a longbed and they both are 2wd and both are 34" frames.

I would but my 73 F250 shortbed has the incab tank and a middle tank that runs along the inside frame and not frame to frame.
I was under the impression that the SCS were the only 2wd trucks with the 34" framerails. Maybe the crews did too... I could have sworn my '76 had the same frame width as a standard 2wd frame width but it's been 5 years or so since I've owned it & looked so I could be remembering wrong.
A PM to NumberDummy would solve that one quickly if you really need to know for sure.
Either way - the truck in question is supposed to be a '79 2wd - which would have the wider frame.
*edit* the above post came in while I was typing this.
Does your rear cross member look like this?
or like this? (minus the square tube welded in the middle - as that was part of the hitch the PO WELDED in )
Send me a picture anyway if you would of the rear frame from the axle to the back where the bumper bolts up Maybe it will shed some light on this. Maybe it had an in cab tank at one point and someone changed the cab to a 79. Ya never know
My buddy sent me the measure From rail to rail its about 28 inches
from crossmember to crossmember its 17.5 give or take an inch.
It doesnot have a crossmember at the very rear of the from, just has the bumper brackets welded on. But it does look like the 2 picture with no springs Thanks for the pictures

This is what was thinking. Have you verified the frame VIN vs. the one of the door jamb?
See the pics above for reference otherwise. They aren't exactly what you asked for, but were all I already had loaded in photobucket.
*edit* - above post came in while I was typing again.
you sir seem to have a highboy frame under the truck. Do a search for "highboy gas tank" and you'll find lots of threads on people's ideas for this. It boils down to an SCS tank, a weird tank out of a cab & chassis 80's/90's (not 100% sure) truck or a custom tank - IF you need it to go in the rear behind the axle.
Let me re-phrase. "You seem to have a highboy width frame".
As I said in the post above I thought the only 2wd with the narrow frame were the SCS's but I very well could be wrong. The 28" your buddy measured is the inside dimension of a 34" outside frame width (I know this offhand as I am currently making a custom rear tank for my truck - which is why I have the pics above). That is the same as my '74, 4wd crew cab in the 2nd & 3rd pic I posted above.
The 2wd F250 frames are essensially high boy frames with the only difference being the crossmembers at the front. I'm only 100% positive about this up to 77 1/2. My buddies 78 crew F350 also has the narrow frame because it was originally a dually. I know my 77 crew short box (formerly 2wd) has the crossmember mentioned. just my 2 cents...
It sounds to me like he might have a pre-'79 frame. My '76 has two tanks: one in the cab, one under the rear of the cab/front of the bed along the frame rail. Where the rear tank would go is a crossmember consisting of a piece of angle iron that appears to have been installed when the chassis was built. The hole for the tank filler is in the bed but it has a round 'blank' installed to fill the hole.
It is my understanding that 2wd Crew Cabs came with the cab and front tank with short beds and the 4wd Crews came with tanks under the bed and long beds. I could be wrong about this, but I have read this for several years.
