Folks,
Let me say that I have a true clutter/ messy problem! There I said it! I dont even have a lift and think about the same things as Kevin.
I know that these types of units, either fastened in place or movable become monuments. They are also a valuable work saving tool for the shop or projects.
looking forward to Joe's shop project.
Regards,
Chris
Kevin, it sounds like you need another lift or two.
I think if I had a 2 post I’d be able to keep it clear. I wouldn’t feel comfortable stacking under a 2 post, although i did that when I worked at the Pontiac dealer back in the late 80s/90s
I guess it's nice to know everybody struggles with the same issues. I was determined to go 4 post until I talked with my mechanic. He has 7 lifts in his shop, only one 4 post. He keeps it for work trucks that have heavy accessories attached (welders, cranes, etc.) These shift the balance point of the truck to who knows where...
He told me when he retires he plans to set up his personal shop with a 10K 2 post lift. So I went with his recommendation. I've used it enough that I'm satisfied with my decision.
I went with an asymmetrical set up so car doors open wider. That's a benefit as our girth increases... lol
mtflat, your mechanic is looking at the lift from a mechanic's point of view (duh). His focus is on vehicles.
I think others pros of a 4 post lift have a component of lifting other types of vehicles.
A person that doesn't have a lift will be happy with their choice whether it is a 2 post or 4 post lift. Most will be excited just to have one. I love this conversation, people are getting all sorts of reasons to have each one. If they read this thread they will have lots of info to pick one that they feel will work best for them.
Hey Joe, I just wandered over to Fordbarn and found a similar discussion with a few new points. One being that if width in your shop is a problem, a 2 post sets up a bit wider than a 4 post.
You're right about my mechanic's viewpoint. I realized most of my usage of a lift will be similar. Another optional use: I did use mine to lift a deer out of my son's pickup this fall and hang it for skinning.
No matter which you end up with, it's a great improvement over laying in the (gravel) driveway to work on your truck. Enjoy your purchase!
Wrinkles in the door and the door line is still perfect even though the door is torn, and the spreader bar hasn't moved. It's a plastic display car. Hahaha.

That or photo shop art. Funny just the same. Don't think the car would bend like that in real life.
