You would DEFINITELY have to install a fuse block at that point... Right... I mean... Come on man...

Nope. Same fuse for the current Turbonator, double the amperage.

Unless you’re into ET bracket racing. I’ve helped a competitor lined up beside me in the staging lanes. Both of us under his dash chasing an electrical issue. Luckily we didn’t end up running each other but helping each other out is just common at the drag strip. I’ve also borrowed a water pump motor from a competitor at the track. All friends until you pull out onto the track. Don’t get me wrong, we want to beat them like a drum. We just want to do it on the track.

That is true. The racing community in the pits and out on track is a beautiful dichotomy.

Oh hell you just had to up the ante, didn't you? I was thinking something from the S400 range would suffice.

All right all you metallurgists. What are your opinions of the failure mode of the turbine shaft?

Was it clean where it sheared when it came out?

Been a LONG time for me on metallurgy. It does look like a case hardened shaft. Note the thin "crust". Case hardened would make sense...hard OD with a tough core..

It looks sooty, almost as if it had been cracked right there for a bit then finally gave out. Its hard to say though because it was hanging out in the turbine housing after it broke. Makes sense what Dan said about being case hardened, either that or some sort of coating. Maybe chrome or nickasil.

Oh. Well, there’s an oil passage where it broke and then the turbine with that stub of shaft popped itself out of the center section and wedged itself in the Turbonator as oil flowed around it and out the exhaust so no, it was definitely not clean. I was lucky and close to home so I made it home before I lost all me oil. What you see in the pictures is after much scrubbing with soap. Hard to say whether the soot got there before or after it popped out of the center section.

Yup, I agree it looks case hardened. It looks like multiple fractures to my eyes which says fatigue failure to me.

Looks like at least 2 events for sure, first the brittle case cracks under torsion load then getting cut off in traffic is enough to twist off the inner portion.
