Yesterday ran 50 mile loop and came home in the rain after dark. Everything worked perfectly especially the defroster! Also ran the cab lights and verified high beams (the halogens work good). Earlier in the trip (during daylight) I noticed the front axle dripping gear oil. Investigation yielded that it was from the vent tube on top. The question is, do the gears tend to pinwheel at higher speeds? I did drive 70 for a few miles but mostly 60MPH. It is possible I overfilled the pumpkin but thought I would run it past the group. Thanks in advance!
What gearing are you running? Original was 4.55 front and 4.56 back for 3/4 ton. I would think you had a little too much in the differential.
Running stock ratios. 2800RPM @ 60MPH. Its fun to drive and all my prep work is paying off! The truck is pretty quick if I manage to find 3rd in reasonable time (the gate is pretty close to 1st compared to Reds T98 so I keep hunting for it)
New update:
I have been driving it about once a week. I am surprised how many old timers had one when he was younger and wished he never sold it. Unfortunately in my neck of the woods I only see mine on the road. Just missed driving it in a local carhop poker ride which would have been fun. First scratch or three are installed in the paint so that wait is over and I am good to go!
As far as towing controller, I would like one with accelerometer but not having much luck finding any that have that inside (specifically stated in the documentation). Maybe I am missing something.
Did another 100 mile round-trip. Brownsville for fuel was first stop and couldn’t resist a NAPA shot for Spurredon... I need to lean out the carb in both cruise and power modes slightly according to my AFR meter. Its running 11 @ WOT and 13.5 @ cruise.
I was thinking about his truck yesterday and what his dad must think about how it turned out?
My dad would only say its “Purty” and I “did a great job on it”. He drove it about 10 years in the 90’s so he is happy to see it revived and is glad for me!
On my last venture an old gentleman was interested in seeing if I only did the exterior paint. Should have taken a picture of this face when he looked inside the cab. And again when he inspected the engine bay. It was well worth the 10 minute delay LMBO!
As a kid I always wondered why the OLD guys had the nice cars & trucks. Now I know... it takes a pile of time and money plus a large helping of patience!
