More than likely one will not have to use their phone for Waze because it`ll be an app for the SYNC 3 system.
My understanding is different. Specifically, us iPhone users will need to install an updated Waze app (due in April?) on our phones. The phones will need to be plugged in to Sync 3 via the USB cable, and the Sync 3 system will talk to the Waze app via its Smartlink / AppLink feature without going through CarPlay.

For example, I can now use the AccuWeather app via my truck's Sync 3 system, but the app is on my iPhone and the phone must be USB connected.

between the ford engineers dumbing down the cameras and crippling the sync I swear!
Lol....Can you tell us how you really feel.

It is very frustrating so I feel your pain.

From what I heard and the way i`m understanding it is that Waze will be an AppLink app and it`ll work through the SYNC system. If that`s the case, just like the other apps in the App catalog and just like the AccuWeather app you mentioned, the apps will have to be on your phone and turned on so the SYNC system can control them via USB.

Think of it this way, if you use Waze through your phone without AppLink or USB, naturally you`ll be using more data and battery. However, and this is the way i`m understanding it, if you use the Waze AppLink app, the SYNC system will control Waze and it`s navigation through the AppLink "specific" Waze app. The phone is needed to use this specific version of Waze so SYNC can talk to, control, and use it`s features.

Hopefully no one believes that WAZE will not continue to use your data. I try to limit WAZE when I can and use the OEM Navigation. I do have Sirius traffic too, it is marginally better than nothing. WAZE can consume some data over the long haul too.

I am on the new new 3.0 update but when I pulled back up to my house this morning and SYNC connected to WiFi it started downloading another update. I have not had time to look at it more than that. Anyone else seeing a new update?

I upgraded to 3.0 via USB. Then when connected to WiFi, it started to update again.

Yes, I upgraded via USB last week. Not sure why I got the update downloading today when it connected to WiFi.

Is it possible that Sync is downloading navigation information after the update?

Update showing

I just went out and did a manual check for updates and this came up. I have done the version 3.0 update last week. anyone know what this could be. I have been waiting for a while to see the blue line move across, but I haven't seen any change I assume it is actually downloading something

Did you install the beta release before Ford officially released the update? If so, and if that update never completes, you may have to get it directly from Ford and install it yourself. Apparently Sync wants all files to be same versions.

No. I installed the version from Ford that came out last week. previous version was 2.3. It doesn't seem to be downloading, just hung. I'm not sure what issues this might cause or how to get out of it.

Huh. I don't know, then. Did it complete that file download and install successfully?

I have been using it for more than a week. Radio says version 3.0 build 18025. Ford site says radio is up to date, so I dont even know how to get another download in case I have to try again

Well. Went back out to the truck to see about the above download and there is no sign that it is now downloading. There is also no record that it tried. it says that the last update check was on 3/3/2018. The version and the build numbers remain unchanged. I guess it was an anomaly.
