I've been doing this computer stuff for over 35 years and I've NEVER heard that files on a DOS/Windows based file system are positional.
Yes, I figured as much.
All i`m saying is what happened to me and my experience so if others decide not to follow the direction on the Ford Owner website then that`s perfectly fine with me.
I merely suggested that to the poster who was having problems because I ran into the same issue and error message awhile back. It won`t hurt to try it.
I have had the same problems with the auto brightness not working, reverting to AM radio sometimes on restart and also it's having a hard time indexing the music on my USB. There are around 3000 songs on there and it just keep saying it's indexing and won't let you do a search for any music. After a two hour drive, half of the songs had the album covers showing up again but still no ability to search.
One thing I have found with respect to the auto brightness is that if you change the dimmer setting for the dash lights, it seems to snap back to where it should have been. I just push the (-) then the (+) to get it working again. Sometimes it just works on its own.
Hopefully there is an update released soon to fix the other annoying issues.
Just to give an update - I was finally able to get mine to take the update to be Sync 3 version 3.0 Build 18025.
I found that using a 16GB USB stick that was formatted as MS-DOS (FAT32) was what worked.
Hope this helps others.
Will see if I experience the other issues some have once I use it tomorrow.
A couple weeks ago, I was able to update my Sync 3 from the pre-release 3.0 to the latest release version of 3.0 (18025). I did this via USB thumbdrive. File I downloaded from Ford owner's site and used was JR3T-14G381-AL.zip
Today, when my truck hooked up to WiFi, it started to download a new update. The first filename it was downloading was JR3T-14G423-CA_103602.tar.gz -- a file that was/is INSIDE of the zip file above. (I shut the truck off @ this point, as I didn't feel like waiting 2 hours and letting the truck run).
The Ford owners's site states that I'm @ the latest version of 3.0.
The Sync screen in the truck indicates that I'm at Build 18025 (the latest build).
Any idea why the truck is trying to download that file (and potentially more, if I let it run) via WiFi?
For those (like myself) who had updated to the unofficial release - Ford has updated the source file on their site, and it is no longer necessary to edit the autoinstall.lst file in order to get the update to install. The edits provided by SoylentSaxgod in post #81 are now contained in the download. Big thanks to SoylentSaxgod for getting this figured out ahead of Ford!
Sometimes mine will start on fm when I shut it off on Sirius but not always. The most annoying is sometimes it won’t connect to my phone even when plugged into usb. It will start to charge phone, then stop, then start etc. kind of annoying. If I shut off truck and restart all is good. I think if I plug phone in before starting it works ok but gives me the problem if I plug in after starting- still checking this theory though. Kind of crazy everyone having all these issues. You would think these issues would show up during their testing.
Mine either starts on FM3 or BT. More often than not FM3. It's been like that for a while on mine since I deleted XM from my options with Forscan. The thing I keep forgetting to do it to program FM3. Every time it starts up at high volume on Spanish talk radio I swear I'll reprogram it.... and always forget. Kind of like changing the shampoo bottle in the shower when it's empty. LOL
This update is aweful.
My parking sensor disable option only pops up half the time now - which is obnoxious as I am hitching a lot.
The main Sync screen doesn't dim at night anymore either. Probably not noticable in the city but out in the sticks its bright!!!!! I've ended up turning off the screen.....
Hit the down button once on your dimmer switch and the main screen will drop to match your gauge cluster. Mine was doing the same on the beta v3 but so far not on the official.
Mine's even worse. I have to hard reset it at least 2/3 of the time right after I start the truck, otherwise the screen is stuck "loading"... I should have left it alone.

So, I tried the "Hit the down button" trick, and it appears to have worked.
