We're having the wood shakes removed, and putting on class 4 impact resistant asphalt shingles. Since our covenant only allows one kind of asphalt shingles ( of course, the most expensive ones they sell), we didn't have a lot of choice. I won't miss the wood shakes, I was always finding bits and pieces of them in the yard.
Like everything anymore roofs are pricey. I had to do our after a windstorm about 15 years back, went with the locking metal roof system and it's been great.
