Good morning Oregon and everyone everywhere else. 53.2°, up from 42 earlier. A few clouds out there, but for all intents and purposes, clear and sunny at the moment.
Been sitting here for the last 3 hours working on 3 different nautical mapping programs, 2 GPS Chart Plotters and a hand held GPS, getting things set and ready for tomorrow. We have an appointment 30 to 40 miles West of Newport with a couple of Halibuts. Want to make sure we get to the right honey holes and don't end up in Hawaii or Japan, which would be bad 'cause we're a couple of gallons short on gas for that.
Mornin' all. Had a physical exam first thing this morning. Nice way to start out. Figured I'd be comfortable so I wore shorts and brought jeans and stuff to change into once I got to work. Haven't changed yet. haha...
Jim - Good luck out there. Looks a little "sporty" out there tomorrow. Be safe.

Well......We are called "SPORT Fishers".
If it is too "Sporty", we don't go. I usually check the Stonewall Bank Buoy and a couple of other things before we leave the driveway.
Currently I think the only way you could consider it "Sporty" is if you are on one of those USCG 40 footers.
Currently it is a NO GO! with 17.5 kts wind gusting to 23.3 with 9.5' waves on 15 second centers. Forecast for tomorrow has changed in the last 24 hours and it isn't looking good...
Bar is restricted to vessels 26' and larger. We're 23.
We'll just have to keep an eye on it. It's kind of looking like we might by working on the backyard fence tomorrow.
Trolling for salmon is one thing...and not something I would do in current conditions.
Drifting for bottom fish is an entirely different matter. I suspect the only folks that can even keep it on the bottom in 240 to 500' of water (without using their boat anchor on the halibut spreader to keep it on the bottom) are the much larger boats that can use their engines for station keeping. Last time we were out in conditions 1/3 of current, we had 4# and then 6# cannon ***** on at 220 to 245 and still couldn't keep it on the bottom using both medium and large spreaders.
It's all a moot point if the bar is restricted to all pleasure craft under 26. I don't need to upset the USCG. When they board and see my USN hat and find out that the boat name is my call sign from Navy flying days, they get these funny wicked little smiles on their faces while sharpening their pencil!
Just talked to my partner. We're calling it. We'll keep an eye on it, but for now I'm not even going to load the electronics up in the boat. Back to the shelf they go. Didn't want to lift the heavy Ocean boxes into the boat anyway.
Man, look at the waves over the top of the Jetties!

Good morning Oregon and everyone everywhere else. 46.7, clear and sunny. The bar at Newport is unrestricted and looking O.K. right now, but not so good farther out so we unhooked the boat, and unloaded the deep sea gear for now.
Now we have the weed eater, mower, post hole digger and hammer and drills out. Not sure how far we will get with any of it.
Jim - I've used the kicker to back into the current before. Not a lot of fun tho. If it makes you feel better we went out saturday to salmon fish and made it until 1100. If the wife hadn't been napping I would of left at sooner. The algae in the Willamette has already made it unfishable. Lucky to have got one and lost one in this really short season. My springer season is over. 3 days of fishing was all.
Spent yesterday afternoon mowing the yard, weed eating, and brush hogging. Spent most of today brush hogging until it got too hot and I was a little over heated. Last time it was this hot and I was doing this I got a good case of poison oak. We'll see if I repeat. haha. Blackberries and poison oak that is 5-6 high is a great time. Trying to get the last bit of area under control but it's a bear when it's on a slope and riddled with tree stumps you can't see.
