Would you want to fly in an aircraft that is maintained by someone on that wage? You pay peanuts you get monkeys. Pay top of the band and you'll get loyal, reliable employees.

You're right, it is hard. You have to look at the long view and build up your reputation over time, not easy in a competitive environment.

FAA schooling for a full A&P takes a at least 18 mo for the schools that do the min needed.
I went to a school that was a full 24 months. But we also got a bunch of helicopter training.

But how ever you look at it the pay rate is poor after you cough up for the union it even worse.
Then there is trying to live on that amount in and around Seatac. What a joke.

And then you still have to pay for the schooling.

Is it supply and demand? Do you have too many aircraft mechanics?

The supply is about even with the demand. I Don't have any idea on why they pay so low
other than they are a small operation and that can give a new A&P the time needed to go
on to other places later.

Your quite right.
I was looking some Indeed . com ads and they had a bunch listed and one
was in Idaho that was over something around about $12 Hr over what Horizon
was offering and Idaho is a low cost of living state and the job was in one of
the less costly places to live there.

If you are in the SE part of the country check M1 Support Services (Ft. Rucker Alabama) contract hiring A&P $23+ hr. Apache, Blackhawk, Chinook, Bell TH67 experience may bump it up a little. Top out at about $37hr. It’s a Union contract (IAM&AW) for Army flight training support and the flight hour program has increased a lot the last few years. Other experience, avionics, Sheetmetal, armament, etc. have been hiring also.

Rusty I want to stay on the Western part of the states while avoiding Comifornia.
Sadly the Bums escaping from that place are screwing over Oregon and Washington
with all the stupidity that they ruined California with and turned it into Comifornia.

Sean: thanks for the vid on the busting-the-scamsters, I enjoyed that a lot! Got Step Mom's accounts and credit all locked down with no funds lost -- they do have personal data and will likely call her forever... Ok, amusing story about part of the scam: She is on an 11 year old Apple -- we don't know squat about Apples so talked to BIL who has always had them and currently works in an Apple store. He said it is unlikely the scammers got to anything in her computer, but just to be safe, take it into her local store to have it checked out, which she did. Dropped it off and they said come back later to pick it up -- when she went back they couldn't find her Mac! They told her it might have gotten "shipped out" (my guess is accidentally sent to recycle) and they'd look for it. But I'm impressed with Apple as they have told her if they can't find hers, they'll replace it with a new one!

Commiefornia, or Kalifornia... We just got back from several weeks in Oregon - beautiful but some places smokey. Everyone we met up there (including us), whether from here, used to live here, or just reads the news -- all think the state is going to implode. We haven't decided where we will move to, but can't see staying unless things change, and that's doubtful....

Take care and save room in the NW for those of us that aren't CrazyFornians...
Scott
