Today's update: Drove the truck to Tulsa so I could judge high school debates, and got home in time to take it on another outing. Today's run was 153.9 miles and we used 12.636 gallons, for 12.2 MPG. I guess yesterday wasn't a fluke.
This time we went to the Tall Grass Prairie and saw this guy:

Watch out for that guy - my mom adopted one of those Tall Grass buffaloes a few years ago, and the little ingrate never so much as wrote her a thank-you note.
My understanding is that adoptees move in with the adoptive parents. So, did she not take him home? No wonder he's miffed!
I forgot to say how docile this engine is. The road to TGP from the nearest town, Pawhuska, is mostly gravel. All in all we probably put 45 miles on at speeds from 20 to 30 MPH, and always in 4th gear. That means I had it down to 600 RPM many, many times and it doesn't care. No bucking nor lack of power, just give it some throttle and away you go.
Just finished 1,230 in my 2012 Ford Escape, (CT to PA, to VA, to PA, and back to CT)
27.7 mpg!
Next week "should" be able to take the '84-'85-'86 Flareside out of winter hibernation, and really test mileage with the "new" ZF-5 I installed last fall.
I wish my 460 would top 12 mpg! With 4.10 gears and an E4OD pushing a crew cab around I'm usually between 8 and 11, with an average of 9.8 mpg over the entire 31,000 miles I've owned it.
The E4OD won't let it lug down either. But I was able to light up a back tire with my slide-in camper in the bed! (Doesn't say much for my factory limited slip that it only lit one tire...)
I guess I'll find out as I do plan to replace the BW with the ZF. But it won't be a fair comparison as the BW has many miles on it and the ZF has been completely rebuilt. Although, if a fresh ZF rattles then we will know for sure. The BW didn't rattle at all.
In fact, if it had an OD then I wouldn't switch. But, I not only find myself thinking "I need to shift", I actually did try to shift the other day. That didn't work out too well and I got confused about what gear I was in.
The T-18 I had in my '75 CJ5 had reverse up and to the right in the gear pattern. With 4.27 gears I always worried that I'd try to shift that into 5th and get in a world of hurt!

Wife and I did close to that mileage this weekend.
NC to West point NY for a wedding and back to NC.
We took her Subaru and got worst of 29.7 and a best of 31.5 MPG.
Little better than what I could of gotten with my Durango of maybe 16 mpg.
And when get the F100 I was thinking I would be happy with 16 - 18 mpg we will see.
You guys with PU's do you have a cap, bed cover or tail gate down to see if it picks up MPG?

If I want MPG I'll take my wife's GLK diesel. It has gotten an average of 35 MPG in the 43k miles we've driven it. But it isn't a truck. More like a go-kart.
A serious step down in MPG, as in 1/2 the MPG, is my 2015 F150. I have a tonneau cover on it, but haven't checked to see if it improves mileage. Anyway, since it only has 13k miles and is essentially 2 years old we are going to take it instead of the GLK on an upcoming road trip. The thing is comfortable and needs an outing since the last time it went anywhere was to Florida and back dragging a trailer.
Which leads us back to Big Blue. Yesterday he got to help a guy move. Didn't put a lot of weight in him, but whatever it was certainly helped the ride. Drove about 70 miles, but didn't fill up so don't know MPG, although coming home he got to stretch his legs a bit so....
All in all I've put over 400 miles on him in the last 3 days, with nary a problem. Yes, there are still layers to peel, but none that are serious.
