Put some silicone grease on the outside when you install the new filter -- in 60K miles the now "old" filter should come out easier (with the seal on it)...

Plan on the grease. We used to have one of those pullers at my test garage. It was nice when I could buy any tool I though we needed, but with that resource none of us bought tools for home.

Slight delay of game while I'm in a political discussion on another forum about our healthcare insurance. I should have done that before the trans as I would have had the strength to pull out anything stuck up a deep hole.

On the grease for others because I bet Jack knows to use something that
will not mess up the clutches. Silicone grease does not sound like a good idea.
If I were doing it I would use the thick trans assembly lube on it.

Also I was thinking that if you are pulling on one side it would tend to get
stuck more. The pulling force needs to be moved around the seal so that
your not pulling just in one spot. Better yet 2 plastic body tools that can
pull 180º apart from each other.

Anyway just some ideas for the next person that has this problem.

All done Sean. Tons of pics. I just used SP on the seal. I figured it was probably installed dry 13 years ago and with 200k miles there was some adhesion. I played all around the ring trying to get it to budge, it wouldn't. And while I'm not as strong as I was at the beginning of the year with just about every friggin tendon and ligament wiped, I can still torque up lug nuts, so there was plenty of pressure with two hands pulling off the transmission valve body trying to that out. I built out that "tool" on the other end with larger washers and a nut so the tool would act like a power steering puller against the case. But a mini chin up got it out. Today I did the pan and the inner tie rod end off the pitman arm and my neck and shoulders are in pain. This will be a few days recovery.

Silicone may be inert in mixing with the SP, but as you surmised, right before application the dielectric went back in the soft tools drawer and a quick wipe with SP went on. I don't think Scotts suggestion was wrong based on his experience, but dark clouds were gathering overhead and I'll take the warning of a higher power. Maybe it was just humidity, but my luck this year isn't good.

I had forgotten that you are working injured. I was sure that you could get it out just wanted to toss some ideas out for
other people that might get in the same spot and need a fix. I agree with the thought about it might of gone in dry so
many years ago.

Now the funny part. I have to do the inner drag link to pitman arm too. I really should do the outer one because the boot
is bad. But it nice and solid right now. I think I will order a outer and both the tie rods ends and just have it all done and happy.
We also have black clouds hanging here. The app on my iPhone says no rain today but it also says no rain till Saturday. So
I think that project will start tomorrow. Today I got to fight with an Email server and also got to setup a new computer.
with more than 8Tb of junk to have to move. Photos and video editing tools with files takes a lot of space. That is my job tonight.

Man, I wished you lived closer Jack... I may be not be the most capable 60 year old in the tack box, but I'd be there to lend a hand...

Can't wait to see how much better the trans shifts after the filter upgrade

Sean: you, sir, are OCD -- it is a silicone seal and a touch of silicone grease...

REALLY? The clutches....?! OK, I get it, I know you are protecting those that would put a toothpaste thick wad around it, so you are right... Drop the silicone grease and put some AT fluid on the outside of the seal...

Hmm, But the seal is cured and tends to stay in one place.

Mark would know for sure.

You know that they give us a document that has what you can use in a assembly of an engine?
They do and if you don't and they have problems later on the big boys can come back and point fingers.

BTW it was just a few grains of walnut that took a twin helo out of the sky.

I use whatever fluid backs it to lubricate it for assembly. For example injector o-rings - motor oil and filter housing o-rings - clean diesel fuel. Trans filter seal gets clean ATF.

I was going to say slide hammer but you beat me to it.

You can pick them up at Harbor Freight fairly inexpensively. I bought one last fall to remove the rigid heater line that comes out the top of the water pump housing. It worked like a charm, and boy was that thing seized!

Here's the one I got:
Slide Hammer and Bearing Puller Set 5 Pc

Nice little kit, and would have been perfect for that filter seal.

I know right. It's my Galaxy S4. The outer lens filter broke so now every pic is cloudy. I'm well over due for a new phone but never have time to go see Sprint.
