Could be a spring clip for maybe one of the solenoids? How big is it?

I'd say if Mark K doesn't recognize it your 99% good to go without it.

Were you using any type of hanging light at the time?

Looks like it is about 32mm wide and 28mm long. I was thinking it came off the solenoids, too. But it is fractured as far as I can tell. All the solenoids have some play in them but none are so loose I can move them around much. I do confess I didn't tug too hard though.

Well one thing you can take comfort in: if it was in the bottom of the pan and the trans was working fine, it must not be needed -- dropped in during assembly? Previous owner fishing around for something via the drain hole and lost it?

The trans doesn't need it, it was just along for the ride

I'll tell a little story. One of our sales managers years ago visited an axle manufacturer for Class 8 vehicles who used our friction material with the large air actuated drum brakes. Those familiar with them know the blocks are quite large.

He told Jim he had something to show him, and went and got one of the blocks. Right in the middle of the friction face that is a ground surface was an embedded hand calculator. Appearantly during production one of the plant people dropped it out of his pocket while the mold was being loaded up.

Jim said he couldn't believe it was right there on the surface and didn't know what to say to the manager and engineers that gathered around. I told Jim he should have said with every 1,000 brake blocks purchased you get a free calculator.

It's possible that during transmission assembly that clip found a home and it was just sitting there. Having been at the vehicle assembly lines, I know that happens. It's very rare, but it does. I say this because none of us recognize the wire clip.

To me the item appears to be a broken return spring. Check the parking pawl.

Emily, what has 87crewdually won behind door 2.

I've never seen that torsion spring first hand and it's not shown at all in the manual. But I can see that being the case from old C4 experience. I'm not familiar enough with the internals to know if that's the only place a torsion spring is used. With it fracturing and being broken, I can understand it not appearing normal.

We will see what he finds. I'm going for lunch. I'll check back.

Fini. Too much for this 65 yo using someone else's tools and a Chinese helper.....my wife...who is sweetest ever but a challenging helper.

The change in the climate has made the ground at least three times harder.

PS: Thanks all. What a great place.

@87crewdually that tranny will have to live without that spring and I will have to hope nothing critical fails on the way to the W Coast then from Hilo to Kailua Kona. I couldn't see where it came from.
