Warmed up truck, got driver side VC off. First order of business was to start truck and make sure that the injectors were emitting oil. All 4 on the driver side seemed to be.
On thing I noticed, was that there was smoke (whitish) coming from Cyll 2,4 (front most two on driver side). Even after shutting down it was wisping out for a while (at least a minute maybe a few minutes).
Here's a photo. When taking the glow plug out. I had a 1/4" 10MM socket, but started with a 1/4-3/8 adapter. The adapter would rub on the "ball" of the rocker arm. Without the adapter there was no rubbing. When I tried to put the quick connect down there, there was no way I was going to get it to line up.
Here's a photo of the adapter trying to mate up, although it would have been better to stick the adapter down more to show the interference.
Should the glow plugs be clean and dry? or is a light black film typically there?
Did you use the approx 6-8" length of hose on the GP adapter, then the gauge?
From the pic, it looks like you were trying to skip the hose? It's the hose in Scottahoe's fingers in his pic of the kit in the red blowmolded case.
We attached the GP adapter to the hose first, then spun it in with the hose. Gotta spin it in quick snaps, as the connection slips. Make sure it starts straight first.

No, the adapter has a 1/8 quick connect. A length of hose would work well. But a hose clamp won't work - because then I won't be able to turn it.

I think that hose is a critical piece. The HF kit doesn't have it.

It looks like that kit, with the straight hose is a better setup than the HF kit. Unless I've missed something.
I think I'm going to bail on doing a compression test. I don't have the tools ( I bought stuff, but it doesn't work :-( ).
I don't think that my root issues point to lack of compression at this point anyway - high egts with load, black fuel filter, "bumpy" EBP, etc.
I'll do the injector o-rings and run a hundred miles or so and then change the fuel filter and seen if any of the measured data changes.
Oil rests around the neck of the GP. I have never been able to pull out a dry glow plug.
OK, I blew out that area, BUT there was a little oil on the threads too so that seems ok.

Yes, I did the same. The QC is about 23/32". My 10mm 1/4-3/8 adapter is 20/32". I could turn GP with the 3/8 adapter but it was rubbing on the round part of the rocker arm. When I switched to 1/4" extension all was well. It seems that even if I could muscle the quick connect on, there will still be significant interference with the rocker arm.
I wonder if you managed to get a narrower quick connect in your kit - something closer to 1/2" OD?
