Anything new to report?

 

Not really. The outer fuel filter was black, but I could see light through it. The inner pleated filter looked ok. Before the injector o-rings my max MAP (Plugged in) was 28.5. After it's 29.5. There **might** have been a small improvement after changing the fuel filter. I don't have enough data to be sure.

The max MAP value I've seen so far is 30 - ONCE. I haven't been able to grab the logs to see if it was anything more than a brief spike, so I'm still calling my max 29.5.

I'm going to run a few tanks of fuel through the truck and then check the fuel filter to see how it's doing.

I'm also going to hook a camera up to to try to find some black smoke.

The lack of black smoke is really bugging me. Shouldn't I be able to do something to get an obvious amount of smoke?

 

I want to try another test. I'd like to tee my EBP sensor into my MAP sensor.

Does anyone know what the threads are for the EBP sensor (NPT?)?

I think this test will tell me 2 things:

1) Is my bouncy EBP because of the sensor?

2) Does that bounciness somehow affect the fueling (limiting boost).

 

I use the rubber-tipped nozzle and a pressure regulator on my air compressor to apply a known pressure on the EBP sensor. Works great while I monitor the EBP PID.

 

I haven't done that. I have introduced air through the exhaust and noted that the EBP sensor was not bouncy when pressure was introduced that way.

If I had a manifold leak, up pipe leak, cac tube leak, etc. then I should be seeing obvious smoke right?

Since I have a distinct lack of black smoke, my working assumption is that my issue is on the fuel side.

What I want to do is to give the computer a "clean" EBP reading, via a TEE in the MAP line and see if, for some strange reason, the bouncy EBP is causing the computer to hold back fuel.

 

I don't "get" EBP yet. I understand the basic idea and when some of its behavior indicates a problem.

Correct me if I am wrong. But the fuel going to the fuel return line will only go through the outer. Correct???

What has your fuel pressure looked like since the inj o-rings?

 

I'm not sure. I thought that the fuel came from the pump through the outer filter (driver side test port ), then through the pleated filter (pass side test port ) and then to the heads.

I **think** the return is from after the outer filter - but I'm not sure.

I've never understood how a black outer and clean inner points to oil coming from the heads though - since that oil would have to pass back through the pleated filter and do it with pressure on the filter in the other direction.


I haven't tested it yet since the pressure was good before the o-ring job. My next test will be probably be on the head side of the filter or even on the heads directly if that is beneficial.

 

Does my hooking the EBP and the MAP together seem like a waste of time?

Should the truck run at full power if s simply disconnect the EBP sensor?

 

The fuel enters through the center black post. There is a spring loaded check valve to ensure the filter is installed. If it was me I would install a fuel pressure guage - I have one in both my 7.3L's. They are almost a necessity in my mind. A great troubleshooting tool.

 

I don't know. I'm not sure how the PCM uses the EBP sensor info.

What I do know is about every 4-5 years when my EBP Sensor whacks out and my fuel mileage tanks I have to replace it and clean the tube, then all goes back to normal again. What has your fuel mileage been?

 

The overhead says from 14.5 to about 16 depending on the number of shorter trips. I have fuel logs. I'll have to get them into a spreadsheet for real info.

 

My most recent actual was 14.25 MPG. It's hard to get a good long term average because most fills have a combo of towing and no towing.

Below are some numbers. There are some outliers that are probably just bad data where the fill was not logged. All of the recent (bottom) 10/11 MPG ones have some or all towing 8,000 lbs.

Before the O-Rings and Fuel filter change the max MAP I could get was about 28.5. Now, it seems like I can get close to 30. So there is some improvement.

In the chart below, I hit 30 on MAP. The mass fuel desired is dropping as the MAP increases though. If the truck was really running all out, wouldn't the mass fuel desired stay high as well?


Also, I figured mass fuel desired would be directly related to ICP and pulse width. However this doesn't seem to be the case. Or would it be ICP, pulse with and RPM?


[EDIT] ICP Is actually dropping off as boost is still going up, it's just not as obvious as with the mass fuel curve [/EDIT]





Here's a zoomed in version of the above data (PW multiplied by 1000). It seems to me that my max boost might be limited by fueling here???

 

I don't mess with MFD or VFD - the tuners tweak this so bad that it can lead one down a garden path right-quick. I'm sure they are useful on a stock truck, but I have not set myself to learn what to expect here.

I see what looks like defueling, but I don't see the IPR or RPM numbers. When I look at fueling (and the results of the fueling), there is a whole list of parameters that need to be taken into account: RPM, IPR, ICP, FIPW, MAP, and EBP.

 

Don't have EBP in this. I can do another with that.

FYI I did a test the other day with EBP unplugged and didn't note any performance difference.

The RPM drop is the TC lockup in 3rd gear.....
