It doesn't seem to use much.

Last time was ~1 QT in 3500 miles with 1/3 to 1/2 of that towing.

After an oil change, I just towed on pretty flat ground about 450 miles and drove a few hundred additional miles without towing and haven't had to add any oil yet. It's still full - actually above where I thought I had it. All the previous checks where right after it was running, this one is after sitting for a day. So a little more makes sense.

Last oil change had an oil analysis and all was well on that front.
Oil from one leaking o-ring will contaminate ALL the injectors so all the cylls can suffer a power loss, not just the leaky hole.
The fuel that has the oil in it can find itself in either head on the next trip...so in effect, yes....but the low ICP causes the power loss due to low atomization etc.

That sounds about right.. Does consumption increase as the mileage on your oil increases?

I don't think so. I don't long the level on the stick so I cant say if it's full for 2500 miles and then all of the sudden needs a quart at 3500 mikes vs just needing a quart at because the level was gradually going down.

I **think** that more load might require more oil consumption though.

Some Fuel numbers WOT towing. Does this show that scenario?:

I have not followed the entire thread.

But regarding a black fuel filter from engine oil.

Is not the fuel rail dead headed on the SD trucks? Unless there has been sort of regulated return installed. Not like the OBS where there was fuel returning to the tank after passing through the head.

There's a return from the filter bowl. I assume the that fuel and oil mix in the fuel rail and that makes its way back in to fuel bowl. Imagine putting food coloring in the end of a tube and then agitating it some. It will mix and disperse.

I understand your point completely. The dead head design assists in this happening. Many people have experienced this oil in/on the fuel filter on the side closest to the fuel bowl housing due to o-ring failure coupled with a pressure differential of about 20,800 psi. With a regulated return, which you have and I do as well at this point, you will not experience this. Did you delete your fuel bowl also?...................................^^^^

No. I used the ITP kit that retained it.

There is indeed a return line off the filter bowl, it's the method that the FPR disposes of unneeded fuel. but the fuel in the fuel galley, machined in the head doesn't return unless there is a provision to do so.

How would oil makes its way to the fuel bowl then?

I wasn't thinking of a return as much as a mixer. If I put a drop of oil in the fuel and agitate it it. The oil will mix with the fuel. If I keep adding oil it will eventually l be mixed all the way back to the fuel bowl. Does that make sense?

Or a set of malfunctioning o-rings on the injector that separates the fuel rail from the oil rail in the head becomes overwhelmed by the pressure differential and creates its own provision in an attempt to equalize the pressure....fuel at 60 psi with oil that is pressurized up to 3200 psi is separated by one o-ring. In his log above I think I saw an ICP of 2850 which will completely overwhelm the fuel at 60 psi.

I did not believe it either until I had three black fuel filters in a row, finally gave in and pulled injectors, replaced o-rings, and reinstalled all of it. It did not happen again and oil consumption dropped from a quart every 400-600 miles to one every 6k now.

That makes some sense - and will also act as a mixer. Now, I assume that this high pressure "pulse" is very short and very low volume so it would not show up on a fuel pressure gauge?

~3 millis * 8 = 24 milliseconds?

I think you are refering to FIPW which is different.

Think of ICP as the "other" oil pressure in the engine. It will stay elevated under load until you take your foot off the throttle...how much it stays elevated and for how long depends upon the health of the HPOP, seals, o-rings, pressure commanded by the PCM via the IPR etc. which is commensurate to how hard you push the pedal...to the floor on a stock tune you will see somewhere near 2800 psi.

Yes I was thinking the pressure was only there when the injector was firing.

I get it, it's there all the time.

However, unless it's a big nasty leak, I guess the pressure on the fuel side may not rise that much. It depends on the volume of oil leaking past the o-ring.

To get this done:

New ORings,
New Glow Plugs (might as well)
Compression Test (since I'm there)
Glow Plug Adapter, 500 PSI gauge,

Can I send my injectors out just to be tested - maybe to Alliant?

What do you guys use the evacuate fuel from the cyll when doing this job?

I only have a shop vac, but will buy a mighty vac if it makes my life easier on this job.

I have the 13mm "special socket" for the valve covers. Any other special tools?
