You are obviously experienced in the use of GIMP. I have now downloaded and started it - only to discover that there is a steep learning curve, something similar to that of Photoshop. So, I'm not sure that GIMP is an option for me to change the color of things. Looks like it'll be easier to actually blast them and quickly paint them.
Ask google how to perform a specific task using Gimp, there are usually lots of simple answers given by people and sometimes even step-by-step tutorials.
Just a heads up regarding your thermostat housing. The 81's have a taller housing so that the upper radiator hose has clearance. I am not sure if your modified bracket has solved this issue. For a clean look with the stock one, use hex keyed plugs instead of the square protrusion style commonly found.
I tried the 81 bracket with the 70's thermostat housing, and I was quickly frustrated. I am thankful for the part you sent. It has no clearance issues.
Ok, the overwhelming choice is for the air cleaner base and snorkels to be black and the brackets to be natural or stamped steel. (My wife and I are in complete agreement.)
Toward that end I brazed the adapter on the other HO snorkel today and blasted both of them as well as the alternator bracket with aluminum oxide, as described in Dad's Air Cleaner. I have lots of bolts and other parts to blast as well over the next few days and then will start powder coating things.

Let me know if you are doing aluminum anytime soon. I need to blast and clear that timing cover.
It will be a bit before I tackle the aluminum. Will probably want to do the air cleaner lid, valve covers, alternator, thermostat housing, and power steering bracket in one go. So the timing cover would fit in nicely.
