That is the way i am leaning, the seller got back to me and said it has 136k on it and ran before pulled so it sounds like a good deal to me personally.
Allison/Cummins/Super Duty combo can't be beat. Ask the seller if you can have the trans inspected prior to purchase. Of course it would be on your dime but would tell you the state of everything.
I am going to check out the tranny tonight or tomorrow depending on when class gets out tonight but it will likely be tomorrow night after work. He is going to hold it for me he said so i will post up how it looks, if it looks good then i have a whole cummins swap drive train for $1200 lol i think that's some sort of record.
Also in other news my hood will be in this Friday and installed...this Friday lol.
I think so too, I was planning painting it to match and going with a Fusion bumper. Personally I don't like the hood that much with the stock bumper but with the offroad bumpers it looks great IMO.
I am looking up all that I can with the serial number off the Allison I am looking into currently on my 3 hour break between classes lol.
Does anyone know how to check transmission bolt patterns? the serial number off the Ally says its SAE#8? the medium duty trucks ran SAE#3 so I can get the transmission adapter plate easily off ebay for around $150-$300 vs $800 on destroked lol and I will just run a cummins starter and flywheel.
Damn, Matt. If you do the engine swap now, that'd be like killing 50 birds with one stone haha. I say if you can afford to and are able to do it now, why not. It seems to make sense to do it now, if you can, since you've already got the truck in the garage, sitting and torn apart. Might as well get it all done while the truck is apart.
And I would say go with the Allison too. Normally I would say everything Ford, but I just feel like the Allison is a better option. One big thing is the 5 speed over the 4 speed, that's obvious right there. And then a built 4R100 is NOT cheap, and all the other conversion parts on top of that. The Allison seems like the simplest and cheapest option and like you said it can handle the power stock. Seems like a win win to me. What would really cool is if you could get a 5R110 Torqshift and use that. Not sure if its possible or how expensive it would be, but it would be pretty sweet.
And nice score on the hood! Its gonna look sweet can't wait to see it. Would be nice to see some good pictures of that ram air hood, as I used to never be a fan of them, but they're starting to grow on me. And you're right should look even better with the fusion bumper.
Thanks! The 5r110 is definitely possible its just very difficult to program it correctly and make it work without issue in an older truck. The allison however only needs a TPS signal to run once the xomputer is programmed to be standalone. I can get that signal wire from the VP injection pump on the engine to run it and bingo done!
I cant wait for the hood to get in my plan is to finish the truck as is then get the cab corners fixed put and once thats done I'll bring her back to the garage and park her for the cummins and tranny swap.
How much horsepower and/or abuse can the 5r110 take vs the Allison?
Personally when it comes to transmissions I like to have enough transmission that it can handle more then what I am putting into it (mostly because I like figure I probably later on will be going up).
Also not sure if you said or not but what is your build plans for the cummins?
Trav
The 5r110 can handle a lot stock the only thing is getting into an older truck and having it work properly. Mark pointed out in an adticle he wrote that it is definitely possible it woukd just take a lot of time and money to tune properly. Going allison is easier because if funxtions as a stand alone and no special adapter playes or flexplates are needed. I cam get. Cummins sae3 plate or stock plat woth an sae3 conversion ring dor under $300 vs $795 for a deatrpked one and a srock Cummins flex plate runs about $150 which is $650 on destroked so i save a pretty penny lol. Also it is easily tunable via laptop even though the stand alone harness runs $1500 from destroked it can be had cheaper Nd even still i would be in the tranny for $2100 vs a built 4r100 for 3-4k then the programmer of another 800.
I would like to note that i lost my train of thought as i wrote the last sentence lol i just got into work from school and had a coworker come up to me and ask me a question while i was typing on my phone lol.
EDIT: Found this chart on all transmissions in stock form and what they can hold none of these numbers are built specs from any company. The Allison i am looking at is a pre 06 model so it is in the 300-400 range and i am shooting for with the 12v. http://www.dieselpowermag.com/tech/1...photo_09.html#

Ahh ok gotcha. I didn't know that on the 5R110, but it makes sense with the programing. Yeah the Allison sounds like a much simpler swap. Sounds like a solid plan. Get to drive that 5.4 a little more huh, haha. So what's going on with the fusion bumpers? Are you planning on those soon, or are you going to hold off for a while?

The 5R110 seems to be pretty tough, and be able to hold a lot of power in stock form. Haven't heard of many of them failing, unless pushing some serious power, or from people just straight up abusing them. Not sure on the Allison though, other than hearing that they're supposed to be pretty much bulletproof. I did hear from my Uncle that he has heard that the Allison's are really good in stock form, but start to fail once you start adding power, not sure what models that was on though. And not sure how accurate it was either.
I think the same thing on transmissions Trav. Build it so it can handle whatever, so that it will fully handle whatever your goals are, and then still have plenty of room to grow if you decide to go for more power. Seems like the best way to do it to me.
