As far as that wiring mod goes there was some big downside to it that Ed explained to me but I forget. I was thinking it had something to do with burning the glow plugs out faster due to excessive charging.
Wiring alone isn't going to do that.
Seeing 14.5 volts immediately after start with a 270+ amp alternator may shorten the life a little, but not excessively.

Did the mod as per Ed, didn't make any difference on how much it charges.
So my alternator is starting to go. I do not now the difference between 3G and 6G. But if I understand correctly a 140 amp alternator for a 94-97 7.3 will plug and play without any pigtail connections. Is this correct?

If you're wanting a 140Amp alternator for your 2006, you just tell advance, autozone or O'reilly's that you want a NEW upper alternator, do not buy rebuilt, from a dual alternator setup. Stock, they come with 110amp, but with a dual alternator, the upper alternator is 140Amp.

If you want the 140 amp 6G, ask for the UPPER alternator, for a dual alternator set-up... 2003-2007 6.0.
Here is a photo
110 on left and 140 on right
If you look at the back side shell it deeper on the 140.
Sean
Snorindad,
I went with the G6 140 AMP upper one for my replacement I recall it was just
under $200 with a Whopping $5 core. Yes I said $5.00 core from O'Reilly.
The down side is it is Chinese but it's doing a much better job.
Anyone know what the set point of the voltage regulator is for our application?
I found that you can get a few different set points with a new regulator. You
just have to order the one you need.
BTW It took more time to get the tools out of the roll a way then to do the change.
Thanks everyone for the quick replies. I am running out of time to get this truck back on the road for an annual family camping trip. First diesel in the coolant now alternator. Did not have time to shop around but picked up an alternator from Napa it is the top in a two alternator set up unfortunately it is a reman. But we are leaving tomorrow in the am if it all comes Together which at this point looks like it will. Again thank you to all that post on here.
summitracing.com claims to have the conversion harness in stock for around $40 IIRC. And O'reilly's has the alternator (NEW, not reman) in stock also for about $160 (w/$10 core IIRC). This is my plan shortly...

I like the EBay harness far better than the $40 version.
Well.
All I can say is Grrrrr. 2 cells on the old battery that O'Reilly would
not replace are a bit lower on the specific gravity tester than the
other 4. It's the center 2 that are the low ones also.
I did try something that I would not normally do and that was to do a
normalizing charge. In other words a controlled over charge. Flooded
cell battery is 15.5 Volts till SG stops changing. It took about 3 hours
to reach that point. I was not happy with the results. I'll have to wait till
the next start to see if it did any good. If not it's a full set of new batteries.
Sean, somewhere on the net I got a site about rebuilding batteries, it worked like a charm on my stone dead battery in my Vette if your tight on cash. Google battery rebuilding and it will come up
110 is the stock alternator, 140 is an upgraded one. You can either ask for the stock 140 (its not an upper of the dual, its available as the 63H upgrade). If you do a big case 3G to 6G, you need this harness that plugs to the new 3G with two plugs, and plugs into teh stock connector on the alternator which was for a 6G. This pigtail is part# W2740 apparently. Anyone have the part number for the alt in a 3 G 140 amp with the smaller 57 or 58 mm pulley, with 8 grooves?
