For clarification purposes, please bear with me due to not knowing how to identify or the differences between a large casing and small casing alt, if I go the local parts store and ask for a 130 amp alt for a 97 7.3L, I will get a 130 amp 3G large casing alt with a 57mm pulley? Is this correct? if not please explain.

The large case 3G is 130 amps, the small case 3G (which will not bolt up to correctly) is 95 amps.

As for pulleys, there is a range it seems from my searching. 58mm is ideal, but my guess is it will most likely have the 64mm pulley.

1995-1997 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel.

And to add you need the alternator pigtail, whether using a conversion harness which is ideal or a new plug and hardwired.

Bullit390, thank you for clarifying that for me. See I learned something new. I was planning on getting the pigtail due to the earlier post of being able to switch around alt if needed. Will the 64mm pulley work or should I go ahead and find a 58mm pulley?

The 64mm will work great and is still smaller than the stock 6G pulley.

If you're able to source a 58mm pulley ($14 on eBay) I would do it.

From what I have been reading I take it we need the "T" mount style.
So I was searching Ebay aka Fleabay
and found this.
This one is a 7768 "T" mount
http://www.ebay.com/itm/251250126666?item=251250126666&viewitem=&vxp=mtr I asked the seller if they could tell me the output in amps.

The only 7765 in a "T" mounting I could find was this one
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ALTERNATOR-FOR-FORD-4-0-ENGINE-95-1995-EXPLORER-DL7765-6-2-USED-EEE-/161023081999?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item257db93e0f&vxp=mtr

Sean

NOTE : I re-ran the search just for a 7768 ALTERNATOR and found a lot more in the "T" style.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...RNATOR&_sop=15
The search for the 7765 ALTERNATOR was really slim in the "T" style.

It's called Side Mount versus the pivot mount of the others

To easily tell if it's a large case 3G you can look at the 3 "sectioned-off" areas on the front of the alternator by the pulley. If it has 2 holes it's a large case alternator. The small case will have 4 holes. Also, the 3G 130 amp only came in large case.

At this point in time I think I'm just gonna go with the 140 amp large case 6G and put the smaller pulley on it to overdrive it. Then I don't have to worry about sourcing the harness and I really don't feel like paying 40+ dollars for the Powermaster one.

At this time I'm also going to be replacing my serpentine belt. I figured it's probably a good idea at ~100,000 miles. lol

On my Expedition, I could change the drive belt in about 5 minutes in a parking lot, but I noticed that the 6.0 is a little more involved. Do you just have to remove the fan shroud or ????? What all does it take to change the serpentine belt? (I know about the tensioner, I used it when I swapped the alternator), but I'm interested in the easiest way to replace the serpentine belt.

The Ford Manual says to remove the Shroud, Radiator, Cooling fan and Cooling fan Stator... LMAO There's no way in hell you need to do all of that.

You don't have to remove anything... But it does take a little foresight to feed to belt. Hard part in pinching the belt to fit past the tensioner.

Thanks, now that I know, I'll give it a shot. I didn't replace it when I did my alternator because it looked like I had to remove the fan shroud, then I got the manual and it said all of the above as stated in my last post. I was like ?????? what the heck? I bet Ford charges for their tech to remove all of those items and he just 'pinches' the belt and does what you said. $$$$

Yea, you have to pinch it to feed it through. Does not require removal of that stuff. I did however remove the small upper curved section of the shroud using a screwdriver and threw it away. Seen quite a few guys do that "mod" now. I'm gonna order the 58mm pulley on eBay because I can't find one locally, all the 3G alternators have had the 64mm. I can say though that the 140 amp alternator is a big upgrade over the 110 small case. I'll get some numbers from the 6G 140 amp large case alternator with a 58mm pulley. Just ordered the pulley on eBay and will be installing a Gates green stripe belt. My factory belt is starting to crack pretty badly.

What Alternator do I have?

So I went out and looked after seeing picts and reading descriptions from you guys. So what actually do I have? It's what came from the Factory as option: 63H EXTRA HEAVY DUTY 140-AMP ALTERNATOR

Before I go ordering a new overdrive pulley, I want to make sure I'm starting in the right place

I didn't know you could get the 140 amp alternator without the dual alternator setup. Supposedly that's where the 140 amp alternator came from was the top alternator from the dual alt setup. To be honest, that looks like the one I just installed. I could easily tell the difference between my old 110 amp small case and the 140 amp large case. I just ordered the overdrive pulley from eBay, was like 19 bucks with shipping. Also, I trimmed off that very top piece of the fan shroud that sits in front of the alternator to give myself a ton more room to work with.
