I take it the 140 amp 6G alternator for us trucks is a large case alternator from the dual alternator setup? I thought I read that it bolts right on and uses the same pulley and harness. I might just go this route, they're in stock for 150 locally.
Yeah, that's the exact same one I bought. I told them mine was the dual alternator and returned the 110 Amp for the core charge of $12. Some only have a $5 core charge. If I remember correctly, the 110 Amp Alternator cost more than the 140 Amp.
Best part is that the 94-97 7.3 3G 130 amp large case alternator is about 20 dollars cheaper than the 6G 140 amp large case alternator. lol I thought about just trying to wire it up but without the pigtail for the 3 wire connector you're SOL. I don't really want to wait either. lol
Just a quick question. How do you know that an aftermarket alternator for a 94-97 7.3L will output 160-170Amps?
Also, I just looked at O'Reilly's. They have a '97 215 Amp Ambulance Alternator for $249.99 with a Lifetime Replacement. WOW! lol
Yea, I was eyeing the Mitsubishi 215 ambulance alternator as well. Problem is that it's not nearly as stocked as the 130 amp. The Mitsubishi alternator has different wiring from the 130 amp as well from the looks of it.

hmmm, I guess I jumped too quickly on my purchase. I'll see how this 140 Amp holds up. It was $160, so I'm not too concerned if I have to upgrade later. I have nothing except an aftermarket stereo in mine. I could always use it as a backup between waiting on the 200 Amp.
I was wondering were you bought this harness? I have been searching and only found two places that had one like yours. One was an ended ebay auction and the other is a company out of Canada. Found some others but don't look like yours. Appreciate all the help.

Mine is from a local rebuilder. He is well over 70 years old, done this all his life and despises the Ford 6G.
You'll notice the 6G to 3G harness is easily available, and never the other way around.
EDIT: Did a Google search and eBay search, looks like the cheap harnesses are sold out, but I notice the pricey Powermaster harness is available. Maybe a local rebuilder has one available?
7.3 Diesel alternator should have the 57/58mm 8 groove pulley.
Looks like the Lester 7768 runs from the 57/58 to 64 mm.
And the Lester 8479 110 amp 6G runs 69-74mm
I know the 3G I sourced has the small pulley and is way smaller than the stock 6G.

That's probably why the 130 amp 3G puts out so much is because it runs a small pulley. You sure that the 57mm pulley on the 6G wouldn't put out just as much as that thing? It's like a 21% decrease in size which should increase the RPM of the alt quite a bit, right? I'm almost debating just getting the large case 6G 140 amp alternator and slapping the small pulley on it to see what it can do. That way I don't have to change wiring.

The 3G is a beast. Max output is irregardless of pulley size.
If Dan is only seeing mid to high 13s with his 140 6G while running, that is with varying RPM as it is, a smaller pulley isn't going to match the 130 3G with 14+ volts.
But it would definately help.
With the conversion harness looking scarce for a cheap option ($40 for the Powermaster is too much) the likely route I would take is the large case 140 amp 6G with the 58mm pulley. A local supplier should have the pulley in stock, if not I see eBay has plenty for around $14. Or at least call a local rebuilder and see if they have conversion harnesses.
I definately recommend the 130 amp 3G, but only with a conversion harness. Even though I am a 3G fan boy (I have installed the 3G in numerous other applications) I would not hardwire the alternator into the harness. I still have my old 110 amp 6G that I will take along on longer trips as back up, just in case. I'm weird like that.
Also, if something for some reason happens out in nowhere's land, I can easily use a new 3G or a new 6G to get home.
Yea, that's the part I don't like about hard wiring it. If you can't get ahold of a 3G for some reason you can always get a 6G one if you just have that jumper harness. The 6G's seem like they are much more readily available since there are tons of 6.0's out on the road these days. I think I'll try the 140 amp 6G large case with the small pulley and see what happens. I'm assuming all 140 amp alternators for the 6.0 are the large case?
I've had good luck contacting sellers of ended auctions to relist an item and pay for it. If they seem legit and have lots of positive feedback with very few negatives, I don't have a problem completing a purchase outside of ebay either. Especially for $15.95 and free shipping. Contact that guy that was selling the harness... Ask him if he's going to list any more in the near future.

I actually do not think the 140 amp 6G is that common. The large case side mount 3G was used (with the 6 groove pulley though) on millions of 2004-2008 F150 , Explorers and Rangers.
