Well, when it rains it pores. I believe I have figured out the noise, hopefully. While I had someone shift the vehicle I listened to hear where the noise was coming from. Transfer case. I took a apart the transfer case. First time for everything. I was slowing taking it apart. Looking everything over. I finally got to the shifting forks. The one closest to the front of vehicle was missing some plastic (bushings?). The fork was pretty worn. I believe that the forks mising a bushing and forks being worn allowed a gear to float and try to shift. So I am looking for a new fork. Anything else I should change while tranny is apart?
Hey guys, found this while searching for threads on the E4OD. I have a 91 F150 4x4 and am having tranny issues. Considering a rebuild. Anyone that has the .zip file. Could you email it to me? briant611@gmail.com
E40D problem and would like a copy of the zip file
I too am experiencing hard shift problems and sometimes the OD light flashes, sometimes not. I replaced the oil and filter, but the tranny and oil were very clean but it had no magnets (which I rectified). I just bought this vehicle 3000 miles ago and don't know the history. Lots of miles on it but it was a fleet vehicle and seems well maintained. I would appreciate a copy of the infamous zip file from dieselzen if anyone could forward it to rrobAThighspeedcrowDOTca.
Thanks in advance. I am off to check codes and the VSS.
how much would you pay to have an E4OD rebuilt? a guy quoted me last week about 2000 with all the updates and 12 month warranty. how much would a new one cost? i really think my tranny is shot.
Been traveling have not had a chance to look at transgression yet. Looks like good parts and triple clutch converter will set me back about $1500 if I do it myself. If you are looking at rebuilt I have found nothing less than the 2000 you are looking at. If I go at this myself I will let everyone know how it goes. Not scared to attempt it but time is issue.
Sorry to bring this one back up from way back, but I would be interested in the zip file that is mentioned here. I have less than 25 posts so I can't directly email one of you guys otherwise I would have done that.
I just bought a 1990 F250 with a 460, 87,000 miles and a blown up E4OD. I am looking for the components I should upgrade with during the rebuild and also E4OD info in general and this sounds like a good resource.
Hello n8in8or,
Yes, the zip file has some part upgrades within it. I was unable to send you an email with the pertinent information for you to get the file as you have declined, through FTE, to be able to receive emails from people within FTE. You need to reset your personal settings to allow my email to get to you.
dieselzen
Hello Dieselzen, I'm so sorry, I tried to look at my info before I sent that so I wouldn't look like an idiot, but I guess I missed it - D'oh! I looked again and I did find the setting this time. It should be all set now. Thank you so much for the quick reply and I can't wait to see this file. Thanks again, n8in8or.
posted this to another board then saw this 1. I am a FORD FREAK I just love their trucks. Bought a 95 f150 at auction the other night only to find later no reverse runs thru the rest of the gears fine shifts good in forward gears and doesnt make any noise in reverse just doesnt move. Is there any way to know if a rebuild is in order ...I say yes...my son(who just happens to rebuild trans for Auto Craft here in OKC) sez probly just wondered if maybe it could be some thing simple like a computer reset or some thing. 300 inline six with E40D tranny.

Sounds internal but I would check a couple of things first.
1. Make sure the MLPS is working properly:
Wrong Gear Starts
Bad or mis-adjusted MLPS
Can cause wrong gear starts, no upshift, falls out of gear, and high line pressure = harsh
upshift and engagements. May or may not set code 67/634 (MLPS out of position).
Note
MLPS is located on driver's side of transmission case.
MLPS adjustment
Place manual lever in Neutral. Line up I.D mark on sensor with l.D. mark on plastic
bushing. Tighten bolts.
To check MLPS
1. Hook red lead of DVOM to pin # 199 (MLP sensor signal).
2. Hook black lead of meter to pin 359 (sensor signal return).
3. Set meter to ohms.
4. Move manual lever through the different positions and compare DVOM reading to
chart below.
Manuel lever position
Meter should read:
P 3769 to 4608 ohms
R 1304 to 1593 ohms
N 660 to 807 ohms
D .... 361 to 442 ohms
2 190 to 232 ohms
I 80 to 95 ohms
Important
If the MLPS needs replacement, use Ford part # E5TZ-7A247-A (New Number: F5TP-7F293-AA). This kit includes a new style harness connector. You must replace the connector to use the new MLPS. By sliding the old wire separator from the original connector up the harness you can leave it in place as you install the new connector. This helps to keep the wires in their original location.
Note
Make sure you clean the harness connector with brake clean and apply some dielectric
grease to the pins. This will ensure a good connection. Use Permatex part # 67V
(dielectric tune-up grease). You can get it at most auto parts stores.
I'd also check the solenoid block connector on the passenger side of the trans. to make sure the wires are not burnt from being close to the exhaust and make sure the connector is dry on the trans. side and the ECM connector is in good shape, making good connection. Like I said, probably not the problem but it's less expensive than an overhaul.
