Before you go thru the trouble of the rebuild you might change out the MLPS/TR and connector to the 1995 version. It's recommended to do this anyway when it's rebuilt. It might fix your hard shifting problem. It did mine. Mine was showing a code 634 but I understand that sometimes this sensor when bad does not set a code. Good luck......Van
Never did it myself. Took it to shop and 11/2 months later still shifting like *****. I am having some electrical issue somewhere. Replaced a PCM, TPS, PSOM, VSS, MLPS, wiring harness, fuel filter, catalytic converter, another transmission rebuild and line pressure still high and and we can't find the cause. I think a transcommand is in my future.
If anyone has any ideas as to why it would be falling out of gear and shifting hard still let me know.
Dont forget there is a special tool kit needed to tear apart and reassemble the E4OD properly, pry that big snap ring out of the case without compressing the OD piston assembly and you can damage the case, and if I remember correctly, to rebuild it right would take a lot longer than 2 hours (Ford warranty pays 12 hours total, and they cut you no slack!) and a good knowledge of the parts as there might be something that seems to look ok, until you look close enough to see that its 90% gone.
The E4OD should have someone familiar with them to rebuild it right (AKA lasting more than a few weeks or months).
Something like a C6 is easier for someone to try for their first time, but not an E4OD, with something like over 800 parts, different valve body gaskets depending on the year and case design, it's too easy to get something small and simple wrong.
Trust me, I should know, I built them for 4 years at a ford dealership.
You should read the whole zip file before you rebuild. It has some pretty good tips on the trany. Just make sure you go through the valve bodys real good. I learned from experience. LG
kinglg,
I've had a couple of guys approach me regarding posting the zip on a web page. Because of some legal concerns, which may be completely non-existent, I have felt it would be wise to just give the info to anyone who asks. I really don't think the material is copyrighted as I downloaded it for free but I don't want to open someone else, or myself, to a lawsuit. But at the same time I can't just sit on the material when it could help someone solve an E4OD problem.
I can imagine it is getting quite tiresome for guys who have posted ealier on this thread, and particularly for poor Oregon250, who are notified of new posts which are only requests for the zip file. I think I'll start my own thread to, hopefully, curtail this problem. R.A.
Yes, ED Milk, you can get the zip file. From what I've been told by the FTE board administrator, Eric_torque1st, you need to click on my user name ( colored blue) to get my email address then write me through that and give me your email address. A lot more trouble but apparently keeps spammers from getting email addresses. If you can't find my email address after trying, post your email address on this thread and I will send it out to you. R.A.
Ricebird and Edmilk,
Regarding the E4OD zip file, the thread I created titled "leave email address, get zip file" was trashed by the administrator. Now you're supposed to click on my username colored in blue to send me an email through the FTE mail system and then I will send you the file. If you can't find my username colored in blue, just send me an email to my personal ISP at:
Hey Dieselzen -- Have you ever heard of the following problems in succession? My vehicle is a '94 E150 conversion van - still very nice. Occasionally very solid (slamming) shifts - this comes and goes. I'm looking for loose wiring, but not finding any.. Followed by blinking light on the shift (OD light), which finally went out and stayed out. Will not come on at all now.. Followed by no cruise control, and the latest is the speedometer just started dancing. The high end of the dance seems to be the accurate speed. So -Question is -- Could all of these be related to the VSS in the pumpkin?
The slamming during the shift could be several things but as you are also having probs. with the speedometer, it's likely the VSS is faulty or has the sensor end covered in metal filings. When the overdrive light blinks the computer is telling you it has found something wrong with it's ability to shift properly and most likely has stored a code(s). You can buy a cheap code reader at an auto parts store or even Walmart. You can also get a tranny shop or dealership to draw the codes for you.
I've already tried to get your email address from FTE but you've set it up not to be able to get emails through FTE. If you will change your settings to allow me to send you an email, I will send you my email address which you can then send me an email, with "E4OD zip file" in the subject and your personal email address in the body, and I will send you a zipped file of information on the E4OD which includes test procedures on the sensors, hard part upgrades, diagrams, and pictures. R.A.
