I usually remove the paint and big rust patches with a small orbital sander. Then into the evapo-rust bucket (I think removing 90% of the paint first makes the evapo-rust last longer). Wire brush off the remaining paint (and black residue), do the BB dance to clean out the inside with multiple water rinses. Quickly dry in the hot sun, else she'll flash rust. Then 2 coats of clean metal primer, 2 color coats. Wet sand between each to fill in those rust pock marks (divits). Oil the pump bore and make sure the check valve is working fine.
hmm ok, the pump bore was rusty but i cleaned that up in a jiff (after an hour to goto the parts store to get the tool) with a wheel cylinder hone.
fount is rust free inside, the outside just seems that the paint is flaking off.
building this one up for my friend so i sent him a text message with a picture of the lantern broken down into alll the little parts and said "well do i leave the paint or repaint it...."
he replied "well if a rare lantern leave it alone...if not then paint it!"
i replied "well its your lantern!! (he didn't know i was building this for him) what color do you want it?"
he said " how about a ford blue color, maybe the blue they use for engine enamel?"
i knew for sure he was a like minded friend and likes fords!
but my painting skills suck to say the least, so ill let him paint it. haha
Tried an AGM Sears from the 30's? Will check with the pros on CCF. Very well built, but the fount has cracks (common with AGM). Show queen allowed on the mantle.
Here's one that I just finished up the other night. I got it for free!
Dated 02/80, it came with the gold colored carrying case and the copper #0 filtering funnel.
sweet 200A blackjack! forgive me if i dont remember you posting before in the thread. what other lanterns or GPA's do ya have?
Justin, I just saw this thread, thought I'd join in. I have a couple of old Coleman stoves as well. An old "war horse" 425 that I'm sure could tell some stories and a minty new without box 413G...no pics of those right now.
Sean, yeah I was pretty stoked to get all the accessories with the lantern.
I need to get a better pic of the set up.
