nice!

im sitting here drafting up a blueprint for a wooden carry case that will fit a 228 bighat and a gallon of fuel..... i figure for all the other sizes just roll the lantern into a large bath towel to make it nice in snug in the box.

Didn't realize the "C" models had such large fill caps.

That is one good-looking oldie!

The "guacamole special" is also quite a "looker"!

Mine all work well, but sure don't look nearly as good!

I'm also looking forward to those designs, Justin.

That large cap is for storage; mantles. Genny, wrench and such.

Hey I got a question - the earlier Coleman's had a different kind of fuel filler cap than newer versions. I have a red 220 I think it is, from 65 that I picked up on eBay. Works great, but there is a screw in the cap. Sometimes in order to get a good seal and have it hold pump pressure ya gotta adjust it out while tightening. Why is it setup like that, what fer, etc, and can it be replaced with a solid cap? Thanks! (Neat pictures, btw)

Great question Ted!

It's called a 3 piece cap (screw, top, inner part that holds the seal).

Sounds like your rubber seal is shot. You can get nephew ones and install yourself easy peezy.

Tighten the cap, unscrew the cap (if it slips, tighten the cap more).

With the screw out, remove the 2 cap pieces.

Torch out that old crusty gasket, slip in a new one and reassemble.

Plenty of step by steps here and the $2 gasket you need.

Or use a newer, one piece cap if that gasket isn't shot. Old coleman parts sells those too, but a different size.

Thanks! Yeah it works OK, it's just different I guess. Why did they set it up like that, what is the purpose? Any regular replacement cap at a hardware store would fit wouldn't it?

It was supposed to let the pressure out in a safer way, without spilling gas on parts that could still be hot.

The one-piece caps are more prone to do just that, but they're cheaper to manufacture.

Any replacement cap made for a Coleman lantern or stove should fit just fine.

Yes, but I'm a Coleman purist and prefer to keep them original. Get the one at the hardware, the fix the old one when time allows.

You're right Pop, too many folks like to release pressure while lit.

Ok. Now this is off topic, a bit - but has to do with Coleman stoves. While I prefer the old green classic type stoves, I found a neat butane Coleman Picnic stove that takes canisters that are no longer made? I think there was a "Hank Roberts" stove that took the same type of butane canister, that was a dead end too. Nobody makes them? Anybody sitting on a stash somewhere maybe? Thanks.
