Well if its a pierce, not often. 
But they don't use it to tow engines often. It's used as a heavy rescue unit. That boom is used to right large over turned vehicles and remove rubble and such.

I used to drive one of those when I was a young man. Only thing is it wasn't for the LA Fire Dept. Great picture.

No, they're not super-wides. Maybe someone tried to "convert' an F-250 to handle heavier loads.

I wish I had gotten a pic of it, but on my way home from a BSA summer camp in Georgia, I saw a hook and ladder truck going down the road...
