Its just not my week

I just got a call from the nephew of the lady where I keep the truck and where I was going to have the party. She fell and is in the hospital so now i will have to find another place to have the party that is 3 days away. That sucks!!!

Can you rent out a local community center or a hall? Maybe pull some of your "fire fighter" strings???

What about hosting it at a closed down fire station, if there are any around??

Well we worked something out today. My buddy stepped up and offered his house. We can still put the truck in his backyard. The only problem is that it is 5 miles away from the barn(each way). I really don't want to drive it that far with a possible hung up brake and questionable running engine. I will give it a shot early on Saturday and hopefully I will make it over there. It will be very disappointing if I can't bring it there. I almost thought of postponing it a few weeks but decided to go ahead and do it.

Guys, I had the best birthday party in my life!! It had some glitches but in the end everyone had a great time. I have to tell the whole story. We all know that the location of the party had to change but there were more problems to overcome. Yesterday morning I went out to the truck, removed the cover, put on the bell, gave it a quick cleaning and hit the start button. She fired up right away but after a minute she died!!The same problem was occurring. I was so disappointed that I couldn’t show her off at the party. I went back to my friends house to finish getting the place ready and told him about the issue with the truck. He was a professional mechanic before becoming a firefighter. He said let me take a quick look at it so we went out to the barn. It died for him quickly and he said, I think its ignition and not fuel related. He pulled the coil wire and I cranked the motor. It initially had spark and then it got weaker and died. If we waited a short time the same thing happened. He said its either the coil or condenser that’s bad. He also asked if Gerald had done some wiring prior to the new issue. I said he had put in some voltage reducers for some of the 6 volt motors. He also thought one of the wires might be reducing the voltage to the coil. I said obviously we don’t have time to fix this before the party so we left and I was bummed that the truck wouldn’t be at the party but happy now that I had an accurate assessment of the problem. I dropped Mark back off at his house, I hooked up his trailer to my truck and headed out to pick up tables and chairs at my local community center. When I was driving down his block, I was shocked to see the truck in his driveway. He somehow hot wired the ignition and made it to the house except he died a few blocks away and then right in his driveway. I was so excited that I would be able to show everybody the truck.

Other glitches of the party were the bakery where we ordered my toilet cake, yes a toilet cake had lost the order so they had to put together a cake that morning so unfortunately not like the one I ordered. Then I picked up the food at a local restaurant, left and was almost back to the house when my wife called me and said they didn’t give you all the food so I had to go back and get the rest. They still shorted us a whole tray of chicken and when we called to complain they said to call back on Monday when a manager was there. We still had enough food.

That was all the glitches. The rest of the party was great. We had 60 people who attended and they all loved the truck. Everyone had fun drinking, gambling, dancing etc!! Here is a couple of pics. I’m going to pic up my needed parts today and get the old gal running good again.

I would invest in a Pertronix Ignitor and coil. That should help solve the issues.

I'm glad you party was a success. It sounds like the normal pre-party glitches and I'm sure you were a nervous wreck, but once the party started and it was too late to worry about things I'll be you settled into relaxation mood pretty fast.

Good friends, good food, and frosty beverages surrounding one fantastic Firetruck, what else do you need? (well, maybe some strippers....LOL)

Thanks Guys!! My friends have been calling today saying what a great time they had. Like I said it was my best birthday yet!!!

Well, we finally got truck problem fixed. We replaced the condenser and the truck ran for a while and died. We changed the coil and it ran really good during the 5 mileuntil I got to the front yard of the barn and it quit. Weak or no spark again. The points were the problem and were not opening enough. Once they were adjusted the truck ran perfect. May be time for a pointless ignition system.

Rich, about the book. I needed a picture of the whole family next to the truck dressed up for the book's ending and I was going to take it at the party but got busy and forgot. The book is pretty much done. I am having a few people edit it for problems or mistakes. I am putting an ad in the Chicago Fire Museum's newsletter coming out soon so I can get a better estimate on the interest. I really think I will do the 1000 copies. It may take a while to sell most of them but for what I have to pay for 200-300 copies I can get the thousand.
