I too am so sorry to hear your Father has passed. I lost a very close and dear freind
the other day. A day may pass that I don't remember her for
a moment. But not likely for quite some time. Both of my parents have
passed now. And it is seldom a day goes by that I don't still miss them.
I pray now for you Keith, for the strength to deal with this.
I have to go to Anchorage for a few days to see some Doctors. But we
are planing a week long camping trip when I get back. This is how I will
deal with the loss of my very dear freind. Somehow for me it really helps
to just get away in nature. Even camping with others there is solitude that will
give me time to help except that she is in a better place and happy to
finally be there.
Thanks Rich and all the other guys for your support and words of comfort. Its been a rough few days and I know it will get easier as time ticks by. Its really hard to believe the man who taught me how to ride a bike and drive a car is gone! I do have plenty of great memories of him and that's whats keeping me together right now!!
Keith, my dad died 22 years ago at the age of 56, I was 28 at the time. He taught me a lot about cars and other stuff. Even after 22 years I think about him almost on a daily basis especially when my sons do something I'd like to tell my dad about. My oldest was born about two months after he died so he never got to see either one of them. There are times today that I wish I had my dad around because he seemed to be able to solve any problem mechanically or electrically.
It's kind of a strange feeling to realize that you are now the "dad", the guy with all the answers, the problem solver, and you have stepped into your parents' role in life. That's where I find myself today. When something breaks I am the one they come to fix it. Dad still helps me out though, I remember ways that he helped fix things and it come flowing out.
It does get easier as time goes on but you will never forget your dad.
I want to thank everyone for their kind words and stories after my Dad's passing! It was pretty rough at first. Just looking at a picture of him caused me to break down. I still think of him constantly and I am grateful I had him for 51 years. There are many like Bob who weren't as fortunate as me to have their father's so long. I'll always have the great memories!!
As far as the truck goes, I found a set of NOS F 7 hood trim. I thought it was a steal for $100. There have been a few on eBay (one now for $219). I had my original ones restored and I bought these for my sons room. They have all types of antique car & truck memorabilia in their rooms so I thought these would look good above a picture of the truck I had made a few months ago. I had a recent picture of it photoshopped in front of it original fire house. Much cheaper then bringing it back there for the shot!!
Here are some pics. The trim pieces were still in the original wrappers.
The spear looks awesome with the pic Keith. Wish my oldest was into that.
He has the typical modern wired band posters on his wall along with
his medieval swords.
A little pleasant surprise this evening. I went on an eBay search and found pictures of my grandfather I had never seen before. Here is the link to it:
(he is in the group of men pic on the right side smiling) also on the back of the truck photo with the guys riding in the truck - back right
Ilya, O yes .... I bought them right away!! They went out in the mail this morning. I asked the seller if there was any info on the back of them and he said only one had some. I was lucky to find them as he had them listed as buy it now so they could of been grabbed out. I am going to crop the image of him and use in the dedication page. Its a great photo of him.
Got them today. They are in great shape for being in the late 20's.
My grandfather is on the right. Not sure who the guy in the middle is? May be a visiting Patrol member from another state or Chicago Fire Patrol Committee member. Notice his dress clothes and bow tie under the new fire coat!
Grandfather is in the rear of the truck. There is that unknown guy again. I'm going to try and scan his helmet to see who he is.
