cut and flared a line for the m/c, after that i got under the truck to spray the bleeders with pb blaster. drivers side front no problem. drivers side rear???? where's the bleeder? busted off, argh. passenger side rear, where's the bleeder? busted off, argh. passenger side front, wtf!!!! busted off.
i had to pay some bills with the truck fund so the axles i wanted are out of reach now and i need to get this truck functional. i don't wanna sink any cash into th 60 rear, so i'ma hit up c/l tonight and see if i can find a cheap sterling rear to swap in since i already have some gears and an install kit. and i'll go and buy the 4.56's and track lock from my buddy for $100 for the d44. i guess geared 3/4 ton axles are better than nothing.
Look into installing speed bleeders in the future. I put them on my rig, and love 'em. One man brake bleeding, no problem. Seeing as I always cheap out and replace one part of the brake system at a time until the next one breaks, I end up bleeding brakes on each truck 10x more than I should.
first thing i do when i do brake work is put neversieze on the bleeders. yea, it sucks and gets all over everything, but i can go to a bleeder 20 years later and it still works.
my 88 had all the bleeders pulled out and neversiezed the day i bought it. it still has the same wheel cylinders and calipers on it, and i have bled the brakes 6 times after replacing brake lines 6 times. never a problem cracking a bleeder loose.
just so it's clear, i didn't bust them off. they were already broke off, just didn't know till today. found a sterling near me with 4.10's for $150, probably gonna buy it unless i find cheaper. not gonna waste $40-50 on a pair of wheel cylinders for the 60 rear.
my adonis dna made orielly auto it's bish today. for some reason they had two separate part numbers for the 3/4 d44 dual piston calipers even though they are interchangeable from side to side. they brought me the two boxes and blew my mind as i had never seen the 3/4 ton "half calipers". you learn something new everyday.
bastids had 2, but one of them was missing the hardware, banjo bushings, and the bleeder screw. somebody effed up on that one. no one else had any on hand so i'm waiting till i head back into town to get the ones i ordered. gotta see if i can borrow my buddy mike's truck to go pick up the sterling rear on tuesday. it's from an 86 so i assume its a first generation short pinion sterling, don't know what year they changed over to long pinion, but i'll need a new yoke to use my gears.
All you have to do is remove the two large-ish bolts and flip flop them around to make either lefts or rights. They dont "need" to be two seperate part numbers but I can see how a big box national chain parts store who more or less caters to your average joe blow driveway mechanic would need to do that.
I can hear the conversations now...
greasy goober with basic "change oil" skills: hey man, you gave me two left calipers IDK what to do.
pimple faced $6/hr kid: they just have one part number for 79 3/4 ton calipers. The almighty computer doesnt list a right side.
GG: but I need a right side caliper.
PF$6K: my computer doesnt list one so I dont think they make them.
GG: weird. Ill just cable tie my locked up caliper to the frame until I can find one in a junk yard. I cant understand why they dont make aftermarket right side calipers. My truck must be "rare"
Jesus, I bet Ive heard similar 100 times in parts stores.
