i may be able to fix it, but i doubt it. grind it down and put a new bearing on, but i think i pretty much killed the shims and that part of the case. i really hate myself right now. was that a dumb move. idiot. dumb move. arrgh. stoooooooopid ***

Reason: slight cleanup
tell us how you really feel about drinking and welding Dan.
not a drinking thing tom. i was doing fine until the wife came out trying to get laid. she gets all hot and bothered whenever i work on stuff. she came out doing a flash dance to get me in the house, i told her i had a few more welds to do and i'd be in. went back to weld the spider to the outer case area and i flaked out and welded the first line i saw when i flipped my lid down. the bearing was about an inch lower than where i was supposed to weld, shear accidental stupid move. i was mucho pissed last night and said eff it after that, but looking closer at it this morning i think i can save it with some clean, precise work with a cutoff wheel and a flapper disk.
the shims should have their thickness printed on them right? can you buy individual shims at places like napa or oriellys? as long as i can get some new shims and a bearing i think i'm ok.
is there some kind of magic term the parts stores use for carrier bearing shims? all i'm finding on their sites is crush sleeves. all of them have the bearing, just not finding any shims.....
surprisingly larry, everything was pretty clean and nice inside. no pitting, rust, or shavings, relatively new clean gear lube. no scuffs or scoring at all on the bearings. i'm just going to be a cheap *** and replace the one i fubared,$12, and seriously if i can salvage the shims i will because i can't find any local. run it till it blows and just go sterling like i originally planned. buddies brother has a couple sitting at his farm that i can get for $100ish when i have the cash.
