Fatdan's super ultra mega slow progress build thread
so i picked up my new truck today. i used to own this truck like 8 years ago, and it hasn't changed much other than losing the 35'' ground hawgs and nice flatbed. but it gained a rebuilt 400. nothing special. 4ish inch drop mount lift in front with added leafs in the rear. got a d60 front lined up for it. and after my buddy trashed the fender with the trailer, i guess the half **** decent bed is now pretty worthless. not worth putting patch panels in a toy, just gonna "massage" it back to shape for now and look into making a flatbed i guess.
400 w/ 50 miles on it, 600 eddy rv cam headers, c-6, 205, hd d44 front, and i believe d60 rear, but it looks bigger to me. honestly didn't pay attention to much because i know the truck and it is solid. can't remember all the details, that was a long time ago, and we are having a heat wave so i wasn't crawling in 4''s of slop to read axle tags and crap. truck has only moved 50ish miles since i owned it. motor was built by my buddy rob who was a ford ase certified blah blah blah from h/s on, 10+years. gotta put some work into the little stuff to get it going, but it will be fun for me to have it back. first time i owned it, i never even got to drive it. bought it with no motor, didn't get one in it, and got tired of seeing it sit through winter so i sold it before spring. it's gonna be fun.
little more info on the motor now. just got off the phone with my buddy rob that built it. it started out as a crate motor in the bronco he bought that i got the c6 and 205 in my garage from. 0.30 over, 9ish to one pistons, cam is a summit brand eddy performer knock off. hopefully it has some decent grunt for now.
plan on a sterling rear with ruffstuff shackle flip. gonna slowly piece together a highsteer setup on the 60 i'm getting. depending on what gears it has (rob said 3.50's but not sure) and what gears are in the 60 i'm getting, i'll just run what matches for a while. if the 60 is 3.54, i'll get a 3.55 sterling, if it's 4.10's i'll get a 4.10 sterling. still have my 4.56 for a sterling, so that will go in down the line. i just don't see the sense spending money on a d60 rear. i'll pick up 4'' s/d springs somewhere in there and try to clean up the front hillbilly built drops. i'm waiting on some replies about tires, but right now it looks pretty rough. a few sets of wore down cheap 38.5'' tsl's, $1k 40'' ground hawgs, and make me an offer 44'' half tread ground hawgs with no replies yet. may just have to wait on tires altogether as crappy big ones aren't any better than small street tires.
Looks like a good project.
The rear end is it possible it's a d70? Check to see if it's got big 1 1/16 lugs maybe left hand thread on one side right hand the other. Otherwise if it has a slight taper on the axle tube at the last few inches to the drum backing plate it could be a 70 as well or slimmer chance a d61. Easiest way is to just pull a shaft and check to see if 30 or 35 spline.
it's a 60. i've just got so used to sterlings now and haven't seen a 60 rear in so long that i got goofy for a minute, don't know why, but it looks huge to me. not many 70's 250's around here anymore. tons of 1/2 tons though. gotta get back into my network of 70's parts guys to see whats around nowadays. lot of stuff went for scrap a few years ago when prices spiked.
You'll be happy with that motor, a built 400 is plenty of fun.
I'm usually just lurking around here, but glad to see you finally have a solid rig to work on.
i am going to whip the **** out of that motor while i build a cheap simple 460. i still have the 460 swap mounts i bought from when i first owned this truck.
At this rate it sounds like that motor will outlast most of the parts on that truck... Get them tires, axles and real springs under that f***er before the focus on swapping powerplants comes up.
i plan to. i have a set of 460 heads that i wanna try my hands at porting, but that is an afterthought. i'll get it up and going and partially put together how i want, but diffs, gears, and possibly tires may have to wait for quite awhile. getting all the bugs worked out, and suspension are the 2 main objectives right now. truck is kind of bare bones. need to do exhaust and wiring first, then get at the other stuff.
Ill say now you cant kill the 400 i tried with mine from running it with 0 oil psi to no collant to only 3 quarts of oil and it was still running when i pulled it for the 460 BUT its a boat anchor compaired to the 460 power wise
