The V10 twin turbo mod is known as the Spark Plug Ouster Or Jettison Jiggerer, or, SPOOJJ. I think the smoke you refer to will be coming from the holes that were the former home to said spark plugs.

IIRC, Bill isn't the one that hates turbo's, especially since he wants 2 of them on his V10. So as long as your waste gate is safety wired open, he has no problem at all if you use your turbo.

I, for one, think Bill handled adversity and criticism way better than 90 percent of those who come on here. So many like to get angry, upset, and argumentative when presented with a dissenting opinion. They resort to childish tactics such as name calling, and then the thread gets ugly. I think he provided a great example of how a mature adult should handle himself...which is something so many never learned.
umm, I did the quote wrong, but that was from Tom. ( crazy 001 )

Thanks guys, I really appreciate that.

it's been awhile since I recall ever doing the speed limit... but between the winding roads where you find your truck begging you to get on it up the on-ramps... and everyone but the tourists (seen clutching their steering wheel in fear) doing 15 over... it'll take some self control to get a 'fair assessment'. Day to day I get 15-17 driving enthusiastically. (I believe the Brits call that 'spirited' driving)

My last road trip was with the cruise set at 75/85 and I just barely eeked out 19 and 21 with the cruise set and a tail wind... but those were completely unloaded and with one pit stop each. (Used a GPS to calculate mileage, since my speedo hasn't been reset for my tires.) The only things I can think of that would account for the 2 mpg difference might be driving from low to high elevation and traffic. (On the way back I followed an Ex most of the way back who blocked some of the wind.)

This is unmodified except for gauges - so I'll post numbers as I bolt up the goodies in my sig.

Thats not fair.

My average is about 10.5 mpg.
When gas was higher, I was getting 13 on every tank, but with gas cheaper I have my foot in it a whole lot more.

For the life of me, I'll never understand why everyone's got the impression the V10 is such a horrible engine as far as mileage is concerned. Not once did anyone ever bad-mouth my wife's Suburban's gas mileage, yet everyone of my idiot freinds has to comment on my V10 SD as if it couldn't get worse mileage if it had a hole punched in the bottom of the tank. For the record, the V10 gets at least as good of mileage as the 'Burb and has much more power and torque. As long as we're talking mileage, my last truck was a Mazda that got 27 MPG, does that make it a better truck than a PSD? No, it did what it was designed for, just like the V10 in my present truck does. Personally, I think it's an amazing motor and I'd just rather have a nice quiet truck that tows what I have, yet is stone reliable and gets mileage I can live with. I'm also old enough to remember the 4x4 Chevys of the mid-to-late '70's that got 8mpg with a carbed 350. Did the owners of those think the sky was falling? No, they knew what they were getting into when they bought the things, just as I did and just as diesel guys do. That's why they make more than one style, model and brand of truck, so we can all buy what we like. Until I ask one of you guys to borrow gas money, you needn't worry about what my truck gets. Just as I won't worry about the sanity of someone who pays good money for a truck that knocks and smokes when it's new...Just kidding!

Technically speaking, you are asking us for gas money(not just v10 guys, but 6.0 and 6.4 guys too). Gas is a supply and demand quantity, and one that doesn't have an endless supply. The more you use, the less there is available, the more the cost goes up, and the more people with more fuel efficient vehicles have to pay for their own gas. I can't tell you how many guys I work with that drive 45 miles one way to work and drive big trucks that get 12-14 mpg and then complain about the cost of gas. If they actually used their trucks for work it would be one thing, but none of them do, and all of them have a car that gets over 30 mpg's and leave it sitting in their driveway.

I don't do that, when I don't need my truck ( or the tools in it ) then I drive my car.
My car gets 14-20 mpg, so its not that big of a help.

That's what I do too. I've got a 4 cyl t-bird(32 mpg) that I drive when I don't have to go to a a job site. My 7.3 averages 21-22 mpg and has more than enough power to pull anything I can hook to it. That's why you will never see me in a 6.0 or 6.4 either.

Well the bigger part about mpg for some people (well me really) is range. When my truck was stock, I could get 240 miles towing my 10,000 pound brick wall at 65 to 70. Not sure about now as I just did the mods. My Chevy 6.0 I could only go 140 miles or so at 65. But that was a 26 gallon tank compared to my 29 gallon. So make that 160 miles as my experience, the V10 gets about the same mpg as my Chevy 6.0 did. (father in law, towing 6,000 pound fifth wheel, at only 60 mph was 8 mpg.)

Anyways, when towing through Montana like I do, gas engines suck. So take that!

I only gas up every 240-300 miles, it depends on how hard I am pushing it.
I have a 36 gallon tank.

I made it 505 miles once empty.

What kind of grades and elevation?

If I was more than a few thousand feet above sea level I would turbo my V10.

Yeah, 6 to 7% grades, up to 10 miles long, one pass is about 20 miles long from 4 to 6% grade. Lowest elevation is 2,000 feet, highest is about 7,000 feet.

Then I take snowmobiles up a 7% grade for 8 miles or so from 4,000 to to 9,500 feet. That is a fun pull, but I don't take my brick wall up that, most is a four place snowmobile trailer with 5 sleds on it and one in the bed.
