Part VI
I would've preferred a bit more weight on the trailer. Ie: Skidsteer
Except that would've involved more chains and such. Plus dad broke one of the trailer's stake pockets because he doesn't pay attention and he wasn't used to the skid being properly tied down. He tried backing the skid off the trailer with a chain still over the rotary mower that was on it.

That's all I can think of to say.....
Now I know I was right.
Before I was old enough to realize that stuff needed chaining down properly dad would put 2 chains on everything and they'd be loose enough that you could take the binders off without undoing them.
Now that I've become informed he hates it, but he does make a better attempt at securing his loads. I make him chain everything down properly when I'm there. We didn't even own 5 chains and binders before. It was pretty pathetic.
2 years ago when we brought the skid home from Ohio to CT he tried telling me that the chains on it were "Good enough" when I only had them half tightened. I informed him that if we were making an 8 hour ride with it we could spare the 10 minutes it would take me to get everything secured down right. I got no argument.
We got a new stake pocket for the trailer, but I need the time to drag out the trailer and welder and grinder and torch to get it done.

We have a guy with us part-time who drives for FedEx. He pulls doubles for them. He has endorsements for doubles, tankers, and HazMat. So I've got another voice of reason with me now that is there when I am not.
DOT will pull you out of service if more than 25% of your required chains are loose or missing. I was riding with my brother a while ago and we saw a local guy's truck going the other way and he had no chains at all on the excavator he was hauling.
Oh and another time I was sitting at the intersection of E. Main and S. Airline (you'll go through that intersection when you come down here) and I saw a truck with a gooseneck coming around the corner from the highway. I didn't even notice what the truck was. I was too worried the dozer they were hauling might fall off. It looked to be the size of a TD7 Dresser dozer. The scary part was that they had 2 chains on the machine with no binders. They didn't even take the slack in the chain up at all. They slowed to make the corner and the dozer rolled forward and smashed against the chain. He accelerated and it rolled back and smashed against the chain on the front. THAT was scary.
Guys like that are the reasons DOT inspectors exist.
Back about 20 years ago a 16 yo girl was making her first ( and probably only ) drive on the highway...an unsecured access door on a piece of heavy equipment came off in front of her and came through her windshield and killed her best friend riding with her.
ok...on a less gruesome note...think I picked up a stomach flu...cant keep anything down, even a single cracker is enough to cause me to run for the bathroom...

Mark: You always hate to hear about stuff like that happening. The issue then is if she was behind him was she maintaining proper following distance? I can't see how a piece could come off a machine and the girl 3 seconds behind wasn't able to avoid it. I suppose I could see how it could happen if she was in the next lane over. Not trying to sound like a jerk, but a lot of incidents involving trucks and fatalities are not the fault of the truck driver.
Either way I'm off to bed. I'll be back tomorrow afternoon after school. Then my second to last on-road for drivers ed at 6.
