Part VI
the 790 is ok too, but i am partial to the cats when it comes to large machines.
john deere makes the best double ender, but the cats are better excavators, loaders, and dozer's..
i think it is mainly because they are heavier machines.
the deere's are lighter and faster, but i think slow and heavy is better when you get to the larger machines because you have more control and can move more material for the relative size of the machine.

What kind of operation are you running that you need so much large iron, Tom?

The people who really **** me off about little details like that are the people who call a riding lawn mower a tractor.[Jacob rant mode off]

I was at a tractor pull and they were loading more weight onto the sled using a Deere loader. A guy (obviously a yuppie who had never done a real day's work) was telling his kid how they used the bulldozer to load more weight on. I told him that it was a loader and he got mad. Oh well.
For anyone who is wondering the difference between a chopper and combine here it is. A combine strips the grain off the plant. A chopper just chops the whole plant into small pieces and spits it back out again.
And I'm sure it annoys anybody here when someone calls their Jeep or whatever crappy SUV they have a truck.

Excavator and trackhoe are regional terms.
A combine and a chopper are completely different in how they work.
The combine separates the grain from the plant and spits the rest of the plant out the back of the machine. A chopper chops the whole plant.
A combine would be used to harvest soybeans or wheat so they would get only the grain.
A chopper would be used to make silage and it takes the whole plant in, chops it up, and spits it out the chute.
You can tell the difference because the chopper is physically smaller because it doesn't have all the equipment to separate the plant and grain.
A dozer is a dozer no matter where you are from and a loader is not a dozer.
You could call a loader a front end loader or front shovel if you so desire, but it's no dozer.
Here is a video of a chopper in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qz7G_YSRMaY
Notice how it is harvesting the entire plant.
Here is a combine in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-L4ZWYCqso (Sorry, Jake, I know it's the wrong color)
Notice how the combine discharges only grain into the wagon and spits the rest of the plant out the rear.
Here's another and possibly better video of a combine harvesting soybeans.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0J07feWSttk
See how the combine does not need to have a truck or tractor there to catch the discharge all the time? That is because the combine has an area right behind the cab where it can store the grain until it can discharge into a truck or wagon.
