crower sells notched lifters to go with their cams….
Yeah, thanks for the suggestions but I went ahead and ordered the stock OE replacement cam from Melling that comes with lube and lifters. For my first engine build I figured I'd go with something simple. I liked the amount of power the truck had before, with it being worn out and having blowby.
There are numerous options but that's not as important as the oil you run. the cam lube only lasts a few seconds.
Everyone calls it a cam failure but it's actually the lifters that fail and wipe the cam. if you really want to up your chances at success try to find an old set of new lifters on eBay or somewhere.

Okay, thanks for all the help. Got the cam today and plan on installing it sometime this weekend. The melling kit came with lubricant, so I might use that or do some more research. I reckon ill assemble the bottom end and wait to find some good quality lifters. The kit did come with lifters but I haven't inspected them yet.
Here we are, melling cam and lifters and lube. I'm curious on what is on the right side of the cam in the picture, looks like paint or something. On another note, like 4 or 5 of the lifters weren't even in their box when I opened it..
So, are the lifters supposed to be slightly round at the bottom or completely flat? Can't remember which is correct.
Slightly oval shaped on bottom
with center most out
Okay, thanks. I plan on putting the cam in tomorrow with the lubricant they supplied. I have ordered some new old stock comp cam 352-390 hydraulic flat tappet lifters, figured they'd give me the best chance at surviving. Melling cam, comp cam lifters, whatever.
