Good share Wesley! I have seen that before, but it still brings a smile.

The next GTG? Isn't that at your place? Maybe a bit closer to Alvarado TX?

At this point I’m saying it’s in the bed.

Seriously though, I mentioned the leaf spring earlier. Things have a way of hiding in the oddest places.

I also seriously doubt it is inside the cylinder. Fingers crossed.

Lost one of those 10mm bolts when I pulled my injectors.... I looked everywhere.... lights...magnet...etc.... finally gave up .

A few months later, I was standing up over engine to change fuel filter.... looked down.... there it was, on front of engine in the themostat area.

It was certainly a relief finding it !

This isn't good...

First a quick recap. I dropped a 10mm bolt. Somewhere on the top of the motor. So I removed the spider, pipes, boots, turbo, plenums and fuel filter to search for it. I came up empty and reassembled. I also cranked it over by hand and didn't hear anything.

Now everything is back together and I just started the truck. I let cycled it 4 or 5 times for fuel and then started it. And it started right off. Then every few seconds I would hear a "ting" noise. Then it the ting noise turned into a "ting, ting, ting, thing..." and I shut the truck down. I uploaded a video of the startup hoping somebody can give me some advise. I don't know if I'm hearing the bolt inside the motor, or if it's stuck somewhere else...I'm at a total loss. Please have a look at the video and let me know what you think. You can hear it best at the end of the clip.

Ouch. To me it sounds like your worst fears are confirmed, but other more experienced ears will chime in.

Sounds like its banging on a lifter somewhere. I would think if it was in a cylinder there would be some carnage instantly.

I took an endoscope camera into each port and did not see anything, I also stuck a magnet in each port and came up empty. I looked multiple times, but could not id anything. Maybe it was around a corner that I just simply couldn't see.

It sounds too fast to be camshaft speed (1/2 of crank).

I love your idea and would love for it to be true. But man that really sounds like it’s once per revolution.

clineco, maybe try rotating it by hand now. Not sure what this would tell you but might help narrow down the location.. maybe.
Dang, that stinks man.

Yeah that was the first thing I did and I didn't hear anything jingling around.

I cant tell from the video, but are you sure the ting is coming from inside the engine? Perhaps the bolt is trapped somewhere between the front of the engine and a pulley or between the radiator and fan?
