I’m 10 day in now waiting for my parts. Almost unbelievable that 5 days in LA to go from USPS to the airport. Should have had them shipped via Purolator on the company account. As they say... hindsight is 20/20. Next time!!! Heck Eagle Point Oregon is only a 9 hour drive from my house if the Canada US border was open, but the fuel cost would be a tad higher than the shipping. Feel like an expectant father once again, only this time for a little brown box.
I know that has to be frustrating. When you’re waiting on parts (like a kid at Christmas) 1 day seems like 10 so I guess you’re up to 100 days of waiting now.
Picked up my 6637 yesterday along with the fuel filter. Turns out their online price is significantly higher than the pricing if you walk in. $76.00 for the 6637. $27.00 for the fuel filter NAPA brand, $82.00 if I went with the WIX. Not sure of the difference, both were 12 microns so NAPA is going in. Went to the local diesel performance shop where I got my work done last year for up’s, ebpv delete and WW2. They had a piece of 4” exhaust cutoff and put it in my hands
Parts from Riffraff cleared Canada customs last night so maybe they will arrive today. Not going to hold my breath though.
Tonight I will do the SSJ airbox removal. Might as well commit. That is one huge filter. I can see why it will breathe better.
Did the airbox cut and hack/ trim and smooth. SSJ is right. Makes for a ton of room on that side. Got the exhaust pipe cut to size, drilled the hole for the filter minder and put a splash of gloss black on it.
Question... the insulation/ foil wrap on the intercooler pipe. I’ve seen where some people have removed this. Cleans up the engine bay, but, must be there for preventing the pipe from gaining heat from the motor, does it also reduce noise from the turbo?
Any benefit other than aesthetics to remove it or not a good idea?
I did check it and has not worn through on the power steering fitting.

The insulation is strictly accoustic. Reduces turbo noise.
Parts came yesterday. Couldn’t wait to open the box.
Made up a rubber cushion to be installed at the 42 pin connector rub point. Cut keyholes to lock it into place on the bracket. Also taped up the harness because I’m a belt and suspenders kind of guy. This should never cause me any grief. I think that maybe I will punch 2 more holes and zip tie it to the harness as well.
Managed to get in an hour on it this morning before I had to go to work. Got the inserts installed, fuel filter in and the AIH plugged. Spyder goes in tonight, as well as rerouting the wiring for the water temp gauge. Don’t like how the PO had it done.
Tomorrow will be the intercooler tubes and a boost leak test, finish the air filter install, then...drrr drr drr vroom, rattle rattle rattle.
Hard to stay focused today, just thinking about finishing and firing it up.
Looked into the 5w40 synthetic. Is it really worth the extra $100.00 over regular oil? Preference, or does it make everything work happier? Saw some posts about the Shell Rotella, local shop has Castrol and Mobil 1. Opinions appreciated here as well.
I’d do it myself but it’s become a pain to dispose of the used oil nowadays.
Also will post up a picture later on of the old fuel filter. I want an opinion on if what I’m seeing is normal.

I run synthetic in everything as I feel it is superior oil. But it also doesn’t cost me an extra $100. That could change my opinion on being “worth it”. I know for a fact my 96 started quicker with the synthetic oil. It just flows so much better at cold temps.
As for the weight... well recently I saw somewhere(maybe this thread ) that folks are saying the bigger the gap between the low and high number the oil will not keep its properties as well. I run the 5w-40 myself but maybe there’s a better option. That’s for someone smarter on oil to say.
You should find a suitable synthetic oil that is cheaper in Canada than what the 5w40 costs you. I have been running Rotella T6 5w40 for the past 6.5 years and have been happy with it. But, I don't really have anything to compare it to because that is all I have used in the engine since I bought the truck.
I plan to try Rotella T4 15w40 for my next oil change and give it a go. I don't have cold start issues and frankly don't have cold starts below say about 20 degrees. Even then, the times that I start my truck in 20 degree weather are very few and far between. If Rotella T4 15w40 performs as well as the T6, then I will switch to it. I would like to get the new Rotella T6 15w40, but they are very proud of that oil as it is very pricey.
A lot of people run SuperTech diesel oil which is the Wal-mart brand. So, just find something you are happy with and can get at a decent price. Send some oil samples off if you like...
Sous, I feel like a synthetic will always outperform the Dino oil. But the conventional worked for many years so I’m sure it’s fine. I just really really like synthetic.
Let me know your thoughts when you do your trial of the T4.
The only advantage to synthetic is the ability to do extended oil changes. If there is a difference in wear at 5k miles, it’s negligible. (In spite of what the ads say )
5w40 is definitely better in cooooold climates. Our HEUI fuel system is a bit sluggish when the 15w40 dead dinosaurs are cold and thick.
