Yeah out of spec fuel pumps from modern manufacturers seems to be a problem these days. On another forum somebody had a pump for SBC that was 18.5 psi!

You've got a 600 CFM there I'm thinking, nothing wrong with that size, you can tailor the engine's total cfm needs by changing the vacuum secondary spring. A smaller cfm carb will have a crisper throttle response, a larger carb will have the opposite effect. I've used everything from a 500 cfm 2 bbl to a 750 cfm 3310 Holley on a 302's, they all worked fine.

My Holley

fuel pressure regulator is installed but I’m waiting to get my regulator pressure gauge before I try to start and tune. Cold weather and hunting is slowing progress. I will be installing pressure gauge directly to regulator.

Any strong recommendations on a certain type of fuel pressure gauge? I have been reading good things about the BG (Barry Grant) 0-15 fuel pressure gauge.

So I was planning to go out tomorrow and buy a Autometer fuel pressure gauge model # 2178. It seems the more I read about these in line pressure gauges and how they change with temperature, etc. I'm thinking that maybe I should just buy a pipe thread to barb fitting and use my vacuum/fuel pressure gauge to read and set the fuel pressure than simply unhook my gauge and reinstall threaded plug and test drive? Any disapproval of this idea? I'd rather save the $40+ dollars unless you all really think I should have a permanently installed gauge.

Okay so I posted picture of new fuel filter because of all the concern about the plastic one I had installed. I also tried to fire the truck up to check fuel pressure with the new fuel regulator attached to the drivers inner fender unfortunately all the fittings leaked fuel badly. I used 3/8 mpt fittings like Holley called for but I didn't use thread tape so now I will remove all fittings and try again with the tape over threads even though I read it could end up causing issues if it makes it into the fuel system, but that's what the Russel fuel filter is there for, right.

I bought Permatex high performance thread sealant and already have everything put back together and waiting for the sealant to cure. I will give it another try in a couple of days, hopefully no more fuel leaks.

Okay so I fired up my truck again to try to test fuel pressure. Thankfully I have all the fuel leaks stopped with the permatex sealant, next I was able to get a accurate fuel pressure reading which is still a high 7.5 psi. The Holley fuel regulator was suppose to come preset at 6 psi. Still it is down from the pre-regulator pressure of 9.5 psi.. I will try to make adjustments to the fuel regulator tomorrow an attempt to get it down to 6.5 psi.

Another quick update, I got the fuel pressure set at 6.5 psi. so I solved that issue but now I noticed after I turned the engine off I have fuel dripping from the secondary boosters and also out the side of carb down onto the intake manifold. I thought lowering fuel pressure would have the opposite effect and the fuel bowls would be lower not higher. Now I need to figure out a entirely new issue/problem!

Are the fuel levels still correct in each bowl?

This has been a long journey, so I can't remember if you've already replaced the needle valves in each bowl?

No, the fuel levels were above the sight plug. I thought I had it properly adjusted prior to adding the fuel regulator and going from 9.5 psi. To a proper 6.5 psi. So I’m a bit confused as to why the float bowl levels are high. No, I never replaced the needle valves, that might be next.
