I took the truck out for a drive today and I have a few questions. My truck was tuned and running very good in 32 degree temps. Today it was 77 degrees and my truck ran strong but I noticed some popping on deceleration and it felt like I had some minor surging at cruise. I checked my engine with a vacuum gauge in the garage and I have a steady 19. Could my choke setting cause these symptoms?
I did all the tuning at operating temperature, what else would cause surging at cruise?
I'd think you'd have a vacuum leak. What did you do with the transmission in it since this began ? I'm thinking you have an automatic in it right ? The modulator valve diaphragm may have ruptured with the spirited driving you mentioned.

I have a three speed manual on the floor. I will drive it again this weekend and see if I get the same results.

I have been driving the truck quite a bit since this post with pretty much the same results, the popping on deceleration is for the most part when the engine is cold, I will deal with it until I replace my choke. The surging is constant at low rpms, I think it would be considered the second transition and from what I read that would be the power valve. A while back a Holley tech talked me into changing my power valve from 6.5 to 9.5 to fix a hesitation since my truck has a steady 19 vacuum, it did fix my hesitation but maybe 9.5 is too big, I'm thinking this could possibly be the cause of my surging?
Power valve size is supposed to be: full operating temperature, slight load on the engine, take a full vacuum reading, half of that. A 9.5 is too much.
A 6.5 PV should be the one you need. What ignition are you running ? The surging could be caused by the ignition.
I still have the stock Duraspark ignition. With the 6.5 PV I had a hesitation, with the 9.5 PV I have surging. I will try something in the middle. I also went from 91 octane gas to 87 octane, non ethanol of course. Another change I recently did was the installation of a fuel pressure regulator to get fuel pressure from 10 psi to 7 psi.
Breaker plate, right. What is the spark box? Ignition?
It's the pot metal box connected to the distributor via a wiring harness.. When they first came out in the 70's they were notorious for failing muy pronto.
