Thank you, oh Mentionbot.

I really would like to both understand the 460 system and have better drawings et al for my web site. Maybe he'd consent to me using his?

Also, I did compare the odometer to Vernon's notes and find that the engine has 1663 miles on it since it was rebuilt. So it should be broken in well. But, as said, I'm running the Brad Penn oil just in case.

Speaking of that oil, it is dark green! I was taken aback when I pulled the plug today and the oil that came out looked very black. But when I poured the new oil in I realized that maybe the old oil wasn't black but green.

The 460 oil pressure *sender* is like a tin can (1.5 around and 2" high? ) sticking straight up.
My '87 uses different gauges so any readings I took wouldn't be helpful to you.

Brad Penn oil is supposed to be green just like the Kendall oils made at their Bradford, PA refinery in the '70's.
Have a look at the Brad Penn website for background and history.

The ZDDP issue is controversial as you can see in the pic I sent you from the Summit catalog. I am saying just stay with the zinc. Like Jim was saying "why not use it?".

Why not?

Because it contaminates catalytic converters rendering them useless?
This is why API has removed it from oils rated higher than SH(I believe)

But there is no Cat on this truck so... why not?

Ahh, so that was the reason for the text, Bruno. Got it now. Anyway, there is no cat as this is an 8600 GVW truck, and I'm running the high ZDDP oil.

As for the oil pressure sending units, plural, the EVTM shows one for the gauge and one for the relay. I'm going to have to figure this rascal out, soon.

Bill/subford - Thanks for that. I missed your post while I was posting.

I think I see part of the problem - I don't have the oil pressure cutoff switch. It is separate from the sending unit and is on a tee? I have the hose to a mechanical pressure gauge there. So, that has been modified, possibly with the same "fix" shown in the pic.

As implied earlier, I'm trying to get my head around the 460 fuel systems, and you apparently have "been there, done that" and have your own circuit diagrams to prove it. Since this seems to be a confusing issue that comes up frequently, I'd like to document the various systems used on these trucks on my web site. May I use your diagrams? And, would you help me get the write up correct?

Yes and yes to your questions above.
Do you have one or two fuel tanks?

Thanks! Two, but I'm told the back one doesn't work. (Vernon/nonrev321 - I paid attention.)

So, a brief aside: How many different fuel systems were used for the 460's? Apparently there was a mechanical pump on some, and then at least two different electrical systems? Is there a place that wraps this up neatly or, as I suspect, that's what I need to do?

Here is the only electrical two tank system that I know for the 460 Carb truck.

For a one tank system:

The non electrical two tank system had the pump on the engine with a solenoid valve mounted on the frame:

Thanks. I have the EVTM up on my web site, so have those diagrams. But that shows a 1-relay system and your last schematic shows two relays. So, aren't there two different systems for the e-pump 460's?

Oops, there are two relays in the EVTM version as well. I just missed one.

It's very nice to have the part numbers for the various vapor separators.

Thank you for your input Subford!

Late Morning Report

Well, the regulator Vernon had in the box is a bypass style, which is right if redoing the whole fuel system. But I'm doing a quick and dirty so wanted the dead-head style, as shown on Rusty.

So, poor Rusty, I borrowed it:

Now to pull the top off the carb and check the needles and bowl. I didn't find a fuel filter, so....
