We had some family visiting from the east coast so we (my wife) decided we would show them Sedona. Red rocks, shopping, spending money, spending money, and of course spending money, lol. Anyway, I wanted to see how the new girl would do as far as diesel mpg and also to see how she handled the mountains. So away we went .
It seems like New River to Sedona on I17 is uphill both ways. There was no traffic to speak of and I hardly did under 80mph (the speed limit for most of the trip is 75mph), I had the AC on high to keep everyone cool and I barely had to step on the accelerator on the steepest mountain areas. The big girl was awesome. The only thing on my mind is my gas mileage.
My truck said I averaged 13.1 mpg. I only have 2 thousand miles on her but does that sound right to your guys? Can it be the 4.3 rear? Or does it still need to be broken in and maybe a little less A/C used? I would appreciate any opinions. Thanks guys.

Sounds right.........The speed is a killer on the fuel mileage.......plus the hills. The 4.30 rear end kills mileage too.
I found the best fuel mileage is RPMs no higher than 2250, below 2000 is even better. the gears are a killer my 3:73s will do 16 plus at 70 on the freeway and the truck only has 1400 mi on it now.
Thanks Roy and everyone else. I guess all things considered then it didn't do too bad. Yeah, I know I need to get a heavy load on her soon. I haven't had the opportunity yet. I will tell you guys one thing, she ate those mountains like nothing, I mean like nothing. It was me and some sports cars, lol. Thanks for all the advice. Stay cool.

No way Roy.... Once they saw me in the rear view they very politely (and quickly) moved to the right. Many of them did have a little trouble dealing with the mountains. But we didn't !!!!!!! LOL.
