Duallys Only

I also started my compressor project. I have it mounted in one of my side boxes. I need to run my air lines and finish soldering my electrical connections.
(( that was from your neighbors ))

I've put too many miles in with cars and trucks that were loud. Damned things will either drive you mad with the drone or pit you to sleep when taking a long trip..
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Took a family vacation from San Jose, CA to Whistler BC. This was the first big haul with the mighty F450. My Sunnybrook is a Titan toy hauler, 40 ft long, triple axles, dual slides, garage loaded, weighing in at a hefty 20K fully loaded. I have been towing this same trailer for 10 years with a 2004 6.0 dually, manual tranny with 410 gears. I don't know if I was more excited to be going on vacation, or seeing how the F450 would tow on this long trip compared to the old truck.
The real test on long steep grades is traveling north on I5 leaving CA and entering OR passing over the Siskiyou pass. These are the longest steepest grades I travel anywhere in the western states. MY old truck, wide open in 3rd gear, traveling between 30-35 mph. The test was going to be even more interesting because I was caravaning with 5 other family and friends all who think they are king of the road. Here's the line up:
2015 Ford F450 towing 40 ft 5th wheel
2011 Dodge 3500 towing 40 ft 5th wheel
2009 GMC towing 36 ft 5th wheel
2004 Ford 6.0 towing 26 ft toy hauler standard tow
2009 Diesel pusher not towing
2014 Diesel pusher not towing
As we were headed up the pass, I took the point, and the entire caravan was consecutively lined up, waiting for the weak to slow and make their moves to the front of the pack. Hitting the bottom of the grade at 60 mph, my goal was to do whatever it took to maintain as close to 60 mph up the entire pass and not get passed by anyone in my posse. As the climb got steeper and the trailers got heavier, I let her breath and started to open her up. EGT's climbed up just over 1000, and boost was about 21 psi if I remember correctly. At this point, I wanted full control over my machine in this drag race to the top, so I put the tranny into manual mode just after she shifted from 6th to 5th.
It was unbelievable how well the F450 was pulling this grade in 5th and maintaining 60 mph. up this monster pass. They actually have an ultra slow lane up the entire pass where big rigs can get all the way over, turn on their emergency lights and crawl up the mountain at 15 - 20 mph.
I started to see the wishful thinkers starting to fade. As the grade increased in steepness, I could see my mph starting to drop slowly by a few mph. It was time to drop to 4th gear and see if I could get back up to 60 mph. The manual shift tranny worked great, (although I dislike the location, a paddle shifter would be more like it), and she crept her way back up to 60 mph. I then wanted to check on engine coolant and tranny temps. Wow, engine coolant rose approx 20 degrees, and the tranny only crept up about 8 degrees. That's impressive.
OK, getting a little long winded here. Made it to the top doing 62 mph, and the rest of the caravan was not even in site. One of the diesel pushers was second in line about 1/2 mile behind, followed by the Doge who was about 3/4 mile behind, and the rest just didn't matter, see you at the next fuel station.
I am not one to brag or even overstate the truth, but It was great bench racing at that evenings camp fire. I admitted that I LOVE my new truck, it was so easy to drive with the trailer, and the power far exceeded my expectations. The exhaust brake and tranny downshifts worked amazing on the descents, and the overall handling, well, it was not even like towing, more like just driving a big car. I told everyone this was the best day of my life towing my trailer.
There were a few complimentary comments from the peanut gallery stating, they were quite impressed the way I left everyone in the dust on the steepest of climbs, and a few derogatory comments about "we'll see how long she lasts running like that". But, I did go to sleep that night just after I was appointed by the group as the new "king of the Mountain"
All in all, the entire trip was just under 2400 miles round trip, and I am thoroughly 100% happy and impressed with my new tow truck. It far exceeded my exceptions in a very big way. Well done Ford. Well Done!
One suggestion, when you come out with that new 10 speed tranny, be sure to put the manual paddle shifter type behind the steering wheel.
Already planning the next trip....so I can tow again.
And of course, one will always hear the negative from the fan boys that can not keep up!!!!!

grin. We just got back a few weeks ago from Florida and had the same results thru the mountains. Enjoy
