Transplant is schedualed to begin either late tommorow, or early friday. I don't have everything I need to complete it, but a huge hurdle will be getting the old engine/trans out, and the new set in place to facilitate fabbing the mounts.
I will likely be limping the truck down to the shop later this evening. The rattling from the current engine sounds quite bad...... I know the diesel will be quieter.
I will try to get some pics along the way, but I'll be doing a lot of it solo, and the only camera I have is my phone, and it's white........
3 day weekend should allow me to get quite a bit done. Even if the engine and trans get bolted into place, they'll likely be coming back out at least once. I may not take the time to do a thorough cleaning on stuff before mocking up the mounts. I can do the final cleaning and prepping once the mounts are mocked, when they come back off for final welding.
Sounds great RW, I'm sure you will love it when it's done. Should be a swag of torque down low.
I know what you mean about the phone, our fines have just gone up again and getting caught touching your phone while driving here means a $400 fine and 4 demerit points (12 points over 3 years means licence loss.)
It made my purchase of a Bluetooth head unit for $300 a no-brainer
160HP, and 400TQ (@ 1600) is more than plenty. I'm expecting mid-upper 20's for MPG. Breaking into the 30's would be fantastic.
Others are getting 25-28 with the 4BT in similar trucks. I would have gone for a 4BT, but they seem to fetch upwards of $2500 for a runner, and I got the 6BT and NV4500 trans, along with a new clutch/pressure plate/flywheel for right at $2K. I figure I should be able to get within 2 MPG of the smaller 4 cyl, and have gobs more grunt too thanks to the inhierent nature of an inline 6.
I may end up with a bit more invested than the cost of a 4BT by itself, but those guys typically spend almost that same amount in additional pieces to make it work.
Yeah, I don't touch the phone when I'm behind the wheel, even though it isn't against the law. It should be, but isn't......
I don't worry about my son using his phone while driving either. Hr drives the B2300. With manual trans and manual steering, his hands are busy with *actual* driving, so the phone gets ignored. Of course, he learned that from me. I used to hand him my phone if it rang while I was driving. I've never subscribed to the "Do as I say, not as I do" method of parenting, like so many do these days........
As I said, I planned to start the transplant process this weekend. I drove the truck to the shop late last night, and then drove it into the shop just before 7PM.
Then this happened:
Got the rad support and gravel panel out. Pretty sure it has never been apart before, given how reluctant some of the pieces were to come apart........
Your rad support would have fallen off the frame horns.
Got a little rust on the passenger side, where the inner fender bolts to the bottom. Battery leaks are to blame........
Notice how small the opening is for the radiator. Hard to believe that tiny radiator managed to keep the engine cool, even with the dealer installed A/C. The radiator is a non-A/C unit, yet it (barely) managed to cope with A/C, and did so for ~34 years......
Are you going to have enough room for a large enough radiator?
I'm planning to enlarge the opening to the size of the Factory air 6 and V8 rads. That should be plenty big enough to fit a 91.5-93 dodge radiator. I've seen several people state this radiator fits easily into place, with minimal mods, and will allow me to use "off the shelf" hoses, from the same application.
I will keep that in mind. Haven't got the radiator yet, but I think it's not going to be much more effort to enlarge the opening on mine, compared to the mods that will need done to *any* core support to accept the dodge radiator.
I forgot to mention the moment of "drama" while taking out the core support. When I took off the DS headlight door, there was a red wasp's nest behind it, with 2 wasps "on duty". I didn't see this for a few minutes, and had been working right close to that area.
For some reason, those 2 wasps never left the nest, and I did eventually see it. Grabbed a can of brake cleaner, and gave it a good soaking. The wasps fell to the ground rather quickly. Soon followed by 3-4 almost hatched wasps. They all twitched around a bit, but never had a chance......
I dunno if the wasps were just freshly hatched and not able to fly yet, or if the fact that I had a rather huge fan pointed right at that particular spot kept them for coming after me. I'm just glad they didn't.......
I have to wonder if that nest was where the one that found it's way into the 74 thru the open window, since they were parked side by side all day. But as I was trying to evacuate the A/C, I moved the 74 closer to the shop. The conversion fitting I needed was in the toolbox of the 74.
There was a red wasp on the inside of the back window, right behind my head, as I moved it. It flew out the door, just after I got out........
Got a bit further today. After spending a little more time sitting here drinking coffee that I normally do on a Friday, I went and gathered some pieces up.
Got to the shop about 1PM, and started getting ready to pull the engine/trans. Just got it up on the lift, and my son called, asking me to give him a ride to work.
Got back to the shop about 4PM. By 8PM, the truck looked like this:
When I got there, I could have looped the trans cooler lines together, and hooked up a battery, to make the truck start/run/drive, though not far without a radiator.
After dropping the trans, I had a bit of a scare. It's not fun to be standing upright under a truck when this happens:
A closer view:
I had the nuts off the motor mounts, and the last thing to do before lowering the lift, was disconnect the exhaust from the engine. Even after not having been touched for over 17 years, the nuts came off without an issue. Well, the second one only came off a little ways, before there was a SERIOUS issue........ Made my heart skip a beat or 3 (hundred).......
Lowered lift rather quickly, and decided it was time for a smoke break.
