Let's kick around here what you want to do with the intake at the GTG. First is mill the cuss words off. Do you have a pic so's I can get my head around mounting it? (I think you posted one, but I'm trying to clean the shop so.....)
Overall, the intake is approx 18" long, and about 5" tall.
Valve covers are cast aluminum.
Torn between leaving the intake looking like bare aluminum, with red on the CTD lettering, or black/red lettering.
Valve covers I want aluminum. I am thinking that having the intake and valve covers both aluminum could be a bit too much "bling" in one area. Intake and turbo housing were originally black, with silver "cuss words" and red CTD lettering.
18" is easy in the blast cabinet. It is 31" wideish, so that'll work fine. And black w/red would look good. We can PC them red, with some red on the intake, then mask them and PC the rest black.
As for the valve covers, if they look good when you take them out of the blast cab we can clear them. Or we could use Blasted Aluminum powder like I'm doing on things.
The biggest issue will be milling the cuss words off. We will have to figure out how to clamp it to the table so they are horizontal. Then there will still be some cleanup if the surface curves any.
The engine will likely be staying black. I would prefer to paint it red, but in a red truck, I just don't think it will look quite right.
Older Cummins engines were Tan, and this one has that color under the black, and inside the front cover/oil pan. Then they were black for a short time, before going to the red they now use.
I wanted to do it red, with black/aluminum accents, just not sure it would look quite right with the rest of the engine bay being red, though it does also have black inner fenders and rad support.
Thoughts?
I had thought about just leaving it all alone for now, and adding the "bling" later. But, the valve covers are all leaking, and the intake horn has to come off in order to get #3 & 4 covers off for new gaskets, which I already have...... Plus, I want to check/adjust the valve lash. Mechanical flat tappet cam......
Leaving the engine black will help hide any oil seepage that may occur. That can be both good and bad. Kinda hard to tell where it's coming from, if you can't see it.......
I'm not sure what finish the intake has (looking at tiny pic's on my phone)
Gary could certainly blend it in with a flap disc if he was able to mill the majority off.
If the engine is to be black and valve covers are aluminum, I think it might look nice red, with black or aluminum letters.
Tying the firewall into the engine without too much red.
The firewall is red, but even after extensive cleaning, it looks kinda dirty-ish and dull.
I may shoot it black, to blend in with the inner fenders/heater box/brake booster. If I do, then I will certainly spray the engine red.
I don't have an after pic yet, but here is a before cleaning shot.....
Holy frame, Batman! Are you sure that thing is up to so much power???
I won't be putting as much power to it as you will on the same kind of frame.
Torque will be somewhat closer, but still not as much as your build is supposed to be capable of.......
Not worried about the weight, since the bulk of it will be centered over the crossmember, unlike a typical V8.........
You know I was just kidding. I have no worries about the frame and I'm sure you don't either.
All true. But, I couldn't help adding that last part, about the engine mounts sitting directly on top of the crossmember, while a V8 sits behind it.......
