Not too likely to change paths. Was mainly just a thought, till I talked to the boss. He plans to use quite a bit of the SD interior and wiring, so there wouldn't be much left over. Not worth the effort.
Yeah, it was just a side thought. I'm not that crazy about the looks of the newer trucks, much less all the extra electronic garbage they have added to them beyond the engine wiring......
On the other hand, since the boss is getting rid of his Cummins powered truck, he told me I could go thru the boxes of Cummins stuff he has, and take whatever I need for doing my swap. There's at least 3 items that I will need, and he knows these are all in there, somewhere. Likely several of them......
Things like the newer style fan hub and water outlets (top and bottom) that have alt/A/C brackets incorporated into them. He's not sure if there is a starter or alt in there that is good. At least there should be some buildable cores I can take to the local rebuilder......
I kinda doubt I can talk him out of the P-pump and timing housing to mount it.......
That's a big help. Sounds like a nice guy to work for.
I've known him for years. When I first met him, he worked for another guy I know. Then he opened his own shop. Out grew it, and moved to the current location.
I have long respected his mechanical skills, and is one of only 2 people I have ever paid to work on any of my vehicles. He rebuilt the C6 in the F150.....
I knew him before he married, and divorced his first wife, who later shot him, and killed herself (in the old shop). I even get along with his current wife....
As for being a nice guy to work for, yeah I guess you could say that. He did buy tickets to the Nascar Bristol night race last year for the entire crew (all 3 of us), and paid the cost of getting there. All we had to buy, was food/drinks, and help out with the driving duties.
I had been to a Nascar race in Texas, wasn't that impressed with the view. Bristol, on the other hand, ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You can see everything, from almost any seat, aside from those real close to the catch fence. Mid-upper deck seating is great. Better breeze, a hair less noise, and much better view......
Never been to Bristol, but have been to Dover many times. The view isn't all that good due to the infield occupants, but you can see half the course from most places. And then there's the noise!

I knew that was a victory burnout, just not who it was. That must have been a blast to see.
I think it was, kinda fuzzy though. Had a couple beers, and chased them with a couple more. Not used to strong beer, in tall cans....... I think I doubled my beer intake for the year, in just a couple hours.
While researching the NV4500 gear ratios, I came across an interesting chart. It shows the ratios for many different trans, both manual and auto.
It shows the ratios for the NP435, T18, ZF5 (SBF style) and the NV4500 (both dodge and GM 94+, 92/93 GM used a much steeper 1st gear).
The thing I find interesting, is how close the ratios in the NV4500 are to the the ZF5, yet how different they are manufactured. The NV was a joint venture between Chrysler's New Process division, and GM's Muncie, so both automakers utilized this trans with minor variations for each. 3 total models, GM, Dodge V8, and Dodge HD V10/diesel, all with the same ratios, and all could be 2wd/4wd.
Not only are the ratios very close to those in the SBF ZF5, but they are also very similar to those in the T18, but with an OD 5th.
Good info. Shows my ZF's 2nd gear to be quite a bit higher than that of an NP435. And that's pretty much the way they drive - the NP's 2nd is still a bit low and the ZF's 2nd is just about right for taking off from a stop.
Yeah, the 2nd gear ratio was what I was mainly looking at, along with the gaps.
Rear axle ratio is yet to be determined for my final piece of the puzzle. Currently, it's a 2.75. Might be a tad bit higher than optimal, even though the I6 TD Cummins makes plenty of torque down low.
I was wanting to compare the 2nd gear ratio to other known transmissions, so I'd have an idea what skipping 1st is going to be like, when the conditions don't call for using such a low gear.
I agree that NP435 has a bit too low 2nd gear. I've had several T18 equipped trucks, and always thought they had a bit better gearing. I now see it wasn't just my imagination or bias.......
