I suggest paying someone to diagnose your running issue. Shops usually charge an hour for diagnosis. For $100, you can quit guessing and plan a solution to your running condition. JMO.

Believe me, I'd like too. I'm almost ready to, but I'm working part time making minimum wage. Anyway I can save a buck I have to...

Ok guys. Here's another problem. And another question.

Last night, as I was leaving work to go home, while I was warming the truck up, it dies on me. Just quits running dead in her tracks. After a few minutes of me trying to figure out what just happened, I had a buddy come along and tow me home. Good thing too, cuz what happened wasn't getting fixed in the side of the road.

What happened was my HEI distributor self destructed. The magnetic pickup tabs inside ground themselves up and I think took out a bearing with them.

So I've replaced the distributor with a stocker, and sent the HEI back to be warrantied.

I was going to swap the HEI distributor for a electronic CDI box style setup. But then I realized, why shouldn't I just keep a plain ol stock breaker point distributor instead? The only real reason I went to HEI was because it was cheaper than replacing yet another stock distributor.

So, convince me one way or the other to
A: buy a new electronic distributor and run a box,
Or
B: stick with a stocker.

That's strange, and a little scary considering I have the same setup. At that time, makes me go "hmmmm" wondering if this might have been part of the problem you've been experiencing.

Stock distributor with a Pertronix set up is all that is necessary on a stock engine.

Hmmm, that's true. I could do that as well. I think I just might. It would be cheaper and more reliable than a electronic box. Especially since I've got a truck that will be off roading and rattling and potentially be getting wet.

Option C: keep a stocker and run a pertronix?

You don't have to set dwell or anything like that with the pertronix do you?

What about an Accel kit compared to pertronix?

Hmm. Guess what? After replacing the distributor,

I have most of my low end power back,
And I'm back to easy starting!

Seems weird that the distributor decided to start screwing up right when I changed to the edelbrock stuff.

That with the fact that you had difficulty getting the dist housing to seat, leads me to believe that it is not a coincidence.

I believe your problem lies in the height difference in the distributor mounting area on your new intake (insufficient) allowing the distributor shaft to bottom in the block creating a load on the dist bearing. Be sure to check for free movement of the distributor shaft ( up/down) after you have it tightened to the intake; , it will just ruin another one. I hope I said this to where it makes sense to more than just me. But know that your scenario has happened to others also! (aftermarket parts just not meshing well)

I didn't quite catch your train of thought, come back around for another pass...

Before I had to lift the distributor up to clear the intake. Now that I have a small bodied stocker, it all fits fine just like it is supposed to.

I would stay away from Accel. I would have had I been a member of this forum before I bought one. Still using the points as can't get it to fire correctly.....all the Accel people can tell me is the ground isn't sufficient?????

I have a 10 yr. old Pertronix set up in my '63. I have re-curved Duraspark with an MSD box in my '72. Both work well.
